I am only give it a couple of stars for the insight into life in Pompeii and the lovely pictures, but I do not think it is that great for learning Latin.

I am teaching Latin to my daughter and we started of with this book. She did not do very well, although she was keen to learn. We now use the more traditional "So you really want to Learn Latin", published by Galore Park, which is brilliant - lots of exercises, with the grammar taught in a logical order. You go straight into 4 tenses of "amo" in the first chapter and my daughter is coming on leaps and bounds now.

My main problem with the CLC is that it is "all over the place", ie you start by learning only the nom. and acc. of nouns and by the end of book 1, only ... Read More:

This is a very clear and precise start on the road to learning German. It is, however, orientated towards children. The CD is excellent and I would definately recommend it as a starter course.

Having learnt Latin at school for two years and then dropped it I decided that I would like to go back and re-learn it.

This series of books are great for this. They take you through each bit of grammar and style with clear written examples and give you lots of practise in the exersizes provided. This is in addition to the prose that is fundamental to every chapter.

The book is divided into 20 chapters, each with a slightly different theme. The chapters involve a set of characters that recur throughout the series. Each one has a different adventure happen to one character or another and you are required to translate them. Very good beginners book - I'd never spoken Welsh before, my family comes from Wales and so I thought I'd give it a go. As one of the previous viewers says; listen to this a few times and you suddenly find you can count, name colours, say hello. All very basic but you do need to start somewhere.

I found the layout of the book really approachable as well. I've always found learning languages difficult and the cartoon approach means that there are no dense lists of words or grammar to scare you off! I would imagine this makes it a great book for children too.

This dictionary is a set text for my 3rd-level OU Latin course, but in my opinion it is not up to the normal OUP standard. Although edited by James Morwood, it seems to be the insensitive abridgement of a much larger work. Although the basic vocabulary is probably adequate, there are not enough phrases/idioms present, esp. on the English-Latin side. On the plus side, the print format is very clear, and the grammar section is quite good.

May suit some, but if you're really serious about the finer details, look elsewhere.

having studied Ancient Greek for 5 years now, I would say that this book may turn out to be very useful sometimes, expecially when in a hurry or not at home: it is very user-friendly and clear.
However, if you want to have a deeper insight into Ancient Greek and the different translations/connotations of words, then choose something more professional.

I actually owned the english version of this book when i was a child, which helped me learn to speak my own language. When i saw this as a deal on a Dummies Guide to Arabic, i jumped at it. It's a very simple way of learning; on every page is a picture of a situation (for instance, rooms in a house) and around the edge of the pages are small pictures of each componant of that scene, and the name for it. So for instance if you were looking at a bathroom scene, around the edge would be a picture of a bath, sink, sponge, shower curtain etc. At the back of a book is an alphabet list and an index of words (useful if you can't tell what a picture is).

For me a dictionary of words would list every word alphabetically with the meaning of the word. This however is a dictionary of phrases from which you can deduce what each word means, such as lupus in fabula (the wolf in the story) and lupus pilum mutat, non mentem (the wolf changes his coat, not his character), in this case lupus clearly means wolf.

This is still a good book and will certainly help greatly, it has a pronunciation guide but no grammar guide and it's hard to see how far into the language this book will take me.

If you want a book that lists all the commonly used Latin phrases then this is for you, if you want to learn Latin then this book should be supplemented which another that actually teaches you the language and ... Read More:
