I have just finished Friends Like This. I loved it, I laughed out loud, chuckled to myself and cried. It's the first book of Danny's I have read. I will certainly be reading more.

This is a page turner, no doubt. The details of his journey are mildly interesting, the people he meets much more so. But there are better books on the DRC and much of this feels over familiar and repetitious. Butcher writes well enough but lacks the ability to convey a deeper understanding. He aint no Kapucinski. But a worthy effort and hats off to him for meeting such a daunting challenge. More than I've ever managed. But, hey, I'm just an interested but slightly disappointed reader.

This is a page turner, no doubt. The details of his journey are mildly interesting, the people he meets much more so. This is great! We were camping up around the lake district and it directed us to some superb little-used spots. It also has excellent suggestions for eating/drinking etc near each campsite and/or warnings if there's a bit of a walk. We definitely found a few gems (like the Drunken Duck!). It covers 40 campsites across England (each one gets a page or two, and some lovely photographs so you can see what you're getting) - not a huge amount of choice, but as it says itself it "features a hand-picked selection", and seemingly they visited hundreds of camp sites across England to find this list of 40, and i'd much prefer that to a huge list of ones where you turn up and are disappointed.

This book has been reviewed on several outdoor forums and magazines and works well as a nice blend of clear reliable guidebook plus photo travelogue. It's aimed as much at the walker or family looking for an unusual summer outing and picnic, as it is for the 'swimmer'. For me it was a perfect timing as last year I decided to be free from all flying as the biggest and easiest way to reduce my carbon emissions.

The swim boxes are particularly useful as they contain 8 point grid references (good for walkers), postcodes (good for drivers) and very detailed walk-in directions in case you don't have a map (with timings and path difficulties). A friend gave me this book to cheer me up. I was dubious. I'm not always a fan of 'funny' books, as humour can be such a personal thing. Thankfully she was right and I was wrong. This really did make me laugh out loud.

Danny tries to stop being so negative by listening to a man on a bus who tells him that he should say 'yes' more. As to be expected from a man who co-wrote and helped in the mayhem that was 'Are You Dave Gorman', Danny takes it to extremes and decides to say yes to absolutely everything in his life.

My favourite part of the whole book is the episode where he ends up in Amsterdam with a picture of him and his imaginary dog. I won't tell you any more because it will spoil the surprise, so now you have to go and read ... Read More:

Having read all the previous reviews there is little left for me to add. This is a marvellous achievement and a great contribution towards making open water swimming accepted in the UK as, indeed it is everywhere else in the world. I compared the Michelin A4 guide against other guides. To me the Michelin guide is much more detailed, and is a perfect size for the car
Also saved £4.55 through Amazon to the RRP, and received it the day after ordering it, even though I'd selected the free postage option - great service.

Only that it's good, has clear mapping and lots of detailed information. It has a ring binding, which I like as this enables you to keep the book open at the desired page without damaging it. It also has a complete index of towns and villages at the back, and each of the city centre maps has its own street index - very useful. Not to mention the small scale route planning map and the map of administrative departments. What more could you need? And it's just about small enough to fit in your glove compartment. So if it seems a little heavy, unwieldy and difficult to navigate at times, well, France is a lot bigger than England.
