. The Forgotten Garden
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer
by: Kate Morton
May 29, 2008
I was a little daunted by the size of the book, I didn't think I would manage to get through it. However, the story was so compelling and wonderfully written, I needn't have worried. I devoured this book.
I never lost interest in the plot, I never felt bored or wished myself onto the next chapter, every page was exciting it was pure sheer escapism.
I loved this book and will be buying more from this author. I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this!

. No Time For Goodbye
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer

I think the extreme reviews on this site in respect of this book (i.e. the 1 star and 5 star) are all a bit wide of the mark. I enjoyed reading the book and the fact that it might not feel very realistic in parts didn't detract from my enjoyment. The author could have been more subtle but I thought the opening was great and, on the whole, I thought this book was easy and enjoyable to read over a few days, albeit I suspect it won't leave a lasting impression on me.

. East of the Sun
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer

It took me a long time to read this book (due to work stuff), and despite it being very different to the type of book I normally read, I found it quite absorbing. Until the end that is....maybe I should have given more thought to what I expected from the end, as I felt a little disappointed. The story offers a wonderful, generous insight into the lifes of these three women and the language is excellent in parts - particularly when describingthe complex relationships of the characters.
Viva Holloway starts off as a brilliant heroine, but I just feel she ends up massively compromising all she believes in a slightly grand fashion...

. The Outcast
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer

The setting of the book is one of the most striking things about the story. The atmosphere that builds is almost claustrophic and reaches a climax through the last pages.
The hero and heroine, as it were, are likeable and their adversaries are quite hateable, i.e Dicky Carmichael!
The story was somewhat predictable, though quite dark in places. I think the blurb does over illustrate the story, it sort of gives a summary to the story rather than an introduction.
It's an easy read, and like a thriller it drags you along. I read it in under 24 hours and it was an enjoyable summer read, but probably not too memorable.

. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: Or the Murder at Road Hill House
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer
by: Kate Summerscale

"The Suspicions of Mr Whicher" is a fascinating account of a Victorian murder mystery. I was not familiar with the Road Hill House murder case, but it appears to be well-known - which means I had a significant gap in my knowledge of British true crime stories. In 1860, the gruesome and tragic killing of a young boy, Saville Kent, at his countryside home and in the dead of night, gripped the nation, with everyone in Britain, it seems (including, for example, Charles Dickens) having their opinion as to who had committed the brutal murder, and with what motive. The newspapers carried daily reports of developments (or rumours) in the case. Most people were convinced, like the detectives assigned to investigate the boy's death, that the answers lay not in a mysterious ... Read More:

. The Ghost
City Travel Guides > Books > Enjoy the Summer
by: Robert Harris
July 03, 2008
The hero in "The Ghost" in an unnamed ghostwriter, who takes over the job as ghostwriter for British ex-prime minister Adam Lang, after the previous ghostwriter, Mike McAra, died mysteriously. Our ghost hero travels to Martha's Vineyard where Lang is staying, and while the ghost tries to meet his deadline, Adam Lang is accused of war crimes and the ghost happens upon some of McAra's research, he realizes Lang may be hiding something.
The book is written in first person, and it's well written, often funny. The book kept my interest and at first the ending seemed like a bit of an anticlimax, but it eventually delivered, but not in the way I had expected. "The Ghost" may not appeal to all thriller fans but I found it enjoyed it.
