I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The youths who took part in the writing project, under the visionary leadership and care of their teachers Erin Gruwell diserve a medal for the way they changed themselves and inspired others. Their heartrending stories have many times brought tears to my eyes. Thumbs up to all of them for overcoming very difficult circumstances and for wanting to make a difference in their lives and the lives of other youths. Keep on going, guys! I think you have already saved many lives with your testimonies. Highly, highly recommend this book for all teachers and educators and anyone interested in the education of our youths, their future and their welfare.

This is a really good book if you're an English speaker, living in a country where English isn't spoken at all. There are lots of really interesting case studies and examples of how families cope with bilingualism.
However, it didn't meet my needs - we are a family living in Wales, where one parent speaks English as a first language, and the other speaks Welsh as a first language. Our situation may not be commonplace, but I didn't find the help I was looking for in this book.
I found Colin Baker's book 'A Parent's and Teacher's guide to bilingualism' met our needs more fully.
Some really good resources and web-site addresses though.

The book has numerous chapters, which are related to all aspects of Early Years Education. After being told to read this book, I was amazed at the quality of it. Its not often that a book is of interest to read, as well as relating at all aspects of Early Years Education. Siraj-Blatchford is a wonder in Early Education and this book is no exception. The chapters on 'Parents as Partners' 'Planning' 'Resourses' and 'Identity and Self-esteem', are brilliant and are extremely useful in the Early Years Sector. Yeah I sound like a SIraj-Blatchford enthusiast, but this is the first book that has hit a nerve within me and the rest of my colleagues.

An excellent overview of the field of second language acquisition and targeted at practising language teachers or trainee teachers. It is not a guide to SLA research methodology, nor is it an overall guide to language teaching methods, "only to those which connect with an SLA perspective."
Each chapter has some activity section, like a questionnaire to answer, or some provocative questions, so that the reader becomes more aware of their attitudes and beliefs about second language learning and teaching.

This book confirms and repeats, over and over again, that bilingualism is a good thing, that there are no disadvantages to bilingualism, and that young children are, for the most part, good at learning languages. This should allay any unfounded fears parents may have that bilingualism might not be a good idea. The poor side of the book is that it can essentially be condensed into the above review. There is little or no practical advice on how parents can best bring up a baby to be bilingual short of those methods obvious to most people (e.g. "talk to your child"). The second half of the book covers different approaches in different schools. The message is good (if obvious), the content shallow.
