Being an architecture student I keep this book with me whenever I am working on projects, be it at work or at university. It is unbelievable how much information Baden-Powell has managed to cram into this tiny book. Among others, some of the topics covered in the book are common furniture sizes, staircases, brick types, soil, wheelchair user space requirements and even drainage, heating and lightbulbs! This book really is a MUST if you are in the architectural field and even if you aren't this book is useful for anyone doing any kind of construction, design or engineering. I would not have survived my degree without this book since it has lots of very useful, "must-know" information which may take ages to find!

I found this book rather unsatisfying. Like so many instructional works in design, the duality of tacit and explicit knowledge was not bridged and again like so many works of this sort it relies upon a rehearsal of historical and contemporary precedents and exemplars to illustrate formal spatial, geometric and structural concepts. Talking about design is not the same as doing it and I did not feel the book helped one to set about tackling a design problem. The many hand drawn illustrations are engaging - the better ones are those that have not been traced or rendered over from photographs.

This is the kind of book that History of Art departments throw at you early on in their courses to instil the right respect and awe for the whole academic ritual.

When I first saw this book at Birkbeck College (2003 History of Art MA) I was duly impressed and intimidated into thinking this was somehow a classic. In this work Baxandall is the exemplary academic, slowly building up a case from painstaking research and cleverly interpreted trivia.

This book covers all phases of garden design, from original research, obtaining the owner's requirements, site survey sketch, checklist and inventory, to conceptual diagrams, presentation plans, theme plan, preliminary garden layout plan and final planting plans.

It discusses space, light, proportion and scale, colour plates, ground plane, vertical plane, overhead plane, materials, texture, principles of planting design, planting styles, practical considerations, seasonal effects, and rendering techniques for various plans. It also has a plant list and plant hardiness zones at the end. This is one of few books that actually discuss the design aspect of gardens / landscaping. Very practical!

I'm amazed nobody has reviewed this book yet! Among the various studies of post-war art it is by far the best. Driven by the relationship between American and European art it seems to cover all of the main debates and is not afraid to tackle complex theoretical issues in a very readable manner. The book contains lively discussions of all the key names: Warhol, Beuys, Rauschenberg, Bourgeois etc. as well as being excellent on Modernism/Postmodernism. Very impressive all round.

Here is an area where the old school of design still lingers, the book is very suitable for specific tasks but really needs improving on. Having said that I threw away my copy of Charlotte Baden-Powell's book as soon as I got this - because even this tome is much more useable than hers.

I read this book in Chinese when I started to learn architecture many yaers ago, and I bought the English version later when I came to the US. I love it, it is one of the best architectural books that you can have.

In this edition of A World History of Art the publishers have adopted a policy of mixing UK and US spelling - e.g. "color" is always spelt thus, whereas "neighbour" and "labour" are written the British way. This may be an attempt to please the market on both sides of the Atlantic without running to the expense of producing two separate editions, but I find it unnatural, artificial, irritating and quite unnecessary: American readers can surely cope with 100% British spelling, and vice versa. If this is some new manifestation of "political correctness", I hope it dies a swift death.
