.Painting and Experience in Fifteenth Century Italy: A Primer in the Social History of Pictorial Style (Oxford Paperbacks)
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: Michael Baxandall

May 19, 1988
This is the kind of book that History of Art departments throw at you early on in their courses to instil the right respect and awe for the whole academic ritual.

When I first saw this book at Birkbeck College (2003 History of Art MA) I was duly impressed and intimidated into thinking this was somehow a classic. In this work Baxandall is the exemplary academic, slowly building up a case from painstaking research and cleverly interpreted trivia.

This approach is fine and dandy until you reflect that at the end of it the conclusions Baxandall has laboured so hard to arrive at are perhaps a little banal -- i.e. Renaissance painting was influenced by such contemporary phenomenon as religious practices, dancing, and the ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Modern Architecture Since 1900
.Modern Architecture Since 1900
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: William Curtis

June 27, 1996
In covering well-trodden ground, William Curtis still manages to shed new light on the subject of Modern Architecture. Much has been written over the years, including Sigfried Giedion's seminal work, Space Time and Architecture, which sought to give Modern Architecture its proper perspective. Mr. Curtis seems greatly beholden to Giedion, especially in his interpretations of Le Corbusier, which comprise a sizeable chunk of this volume. Mr. Curtis downplays the polemics and focuses more on the individual contributions of an incredibly broad range of architects from the early 19th century to the present day.

Wonderful chapters encapsulate the various movements such as his piece on the Revolutionary Architecture of Russia, and how these ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Art in Renaissance Italy, 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art)
.Art in Renaissance Italy, 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art)
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: Evelyn Welch

September 14, 2000
This book is a well researched and a thorough introduction to the art of renaissance Italy. It contains lots of full-page colour illustrations and has a nifty timeline at the back of the book. The author talks about how the art was created and its purpose.
I was expecting a headache after the second chapter but I was surprised to find it lucid and not migraine inducing at all.
It would provide anyone with a reliable introduction to this subject.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Line of Beauty
.The Line of Beauty
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: Alan Hollinghurst

April 01, 2005
Alan Hollinghurst's fourth novel is his most feted, winning the Booker Prize. It is further proof that Hollinghurst is one of our greatest living writers and this novel makes three great works. (I'm afraid "The Spell" didn't do it for me). This is a tale of Tory Britain in the 80s, of wealth, class, greed and excess. Nick Guest lives in London with the family of his Oxford University friend, the Feddens, in a household dominated by the larger than life presence of Gerald, a Tory MP. The beautiful first section charts Nick's relationship with Leo, a working-class black guy who fears his religious mother uncovering his sexuality. The less successful second section sees Nick with Wani, a son of a multi-millionaire whose life is even more closeted than Nick's and ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Gothic Tradition (Cambridge Contexts in Literature)
.The Gothic Tradition (Cambridge Contexts in Literature)
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: David Stevens

June 26, 2000
The Gothic Tradition provides a very good starting point for anyone studying this area of Literature. It provides synopses of the historical revival of the Gothic tradition and the early manifestations of 'Gothic' in literature, art and architecture. There are some excellent exercises which will help the student develop a better understanding of Gothic literature, including extracts from various 'Gothic' novels which could be compared etc. The book also provides an extensive suggested reading list for further investigation which is very useful.
An excellent beginning indeed.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : What's My Motivation?
.What's My Motivation?

by: Michael Simkins

May 05, 2005
I read this after loving 'Fatty Batter'. Michael Simkins has an extraordinary gift for comic writing. It doesn't matter if you haven't the slightest interest in acting (or cricket), this book is hilarious. Perfect holiday reading and guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. Thank you Mr Simkins - you deserve a standing ovation.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh (Penguin Classics)
.The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh (Penguin Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: Vincent Van Gogh

July 31, 1997
While Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, this compilation of his letters combined with a more in-depth study of his work has intensified my appreciation of him as both an artist and a person. I've always felt it was impossible to separate this particular artist from his work and reading his letters has led me to a better understanding of why this is. These letters beautifully capture his soul and spirit and reveal him as the caring, expressive and socially aware person that he was. The combination of strength of character and vulnerability expressed in these letters explain both the intensity and sensitivity of his work.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again (Penguin Modern Classics)
.The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again (Penguin Modern Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Styles and Movements
by: Andy Warhol

February 01, 2007
This book is a strange beast, but never fails to interest whether you dip into a section or read it from cover to cover as I did. Warhol didn't actually write the book, just as he didn't actually paint most of his works himself. He had a tape recorder into which he poured his thoughts, and an assistant with whom he worked to transcribe and edit what he chose to publish. The book is made up of sections rather than chapters, as it has no real narrative thread. Each section is given a title such as money or art, and Warhol simply reels forth his ideology, thoughts and musings on the subject. Luckily he was an extremely odd man with an unusual way of looking at the world, which is what makes the book so entertaining. He had a fascinating relationship with his art and the people ...
