. Henry VIII: King and Court
City Travel Guides > Books > British Royalty
by: Alison Weir
May 05, 2005
This book gives a very thourough and complete insight into all the workings of the Tudor court. It is quite exceptional in it's minute detail. This is a must for serious history students. It's one of those books that needs reading many times as there is just so much detail to be absorbed. Fiction it is not! Totally astonishing was the wealth of Henry VIII's court. Read this book and you will learn all the intricate details of court life for both Henry and his Queens as well as their courtiers. Highly recommended.

. The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn: The Most Happy
City Travel Guides > Books > British Royalty
by: Eric Ives
July 10, 2005
This highly informative account of Anne Boleyn brings to life a Tudor woman once seen as elusive and obscure.
Due to the high volume of biased primary accounts of Anne Boleyn written by the likes of Chapuys (the Spanish ambassador to England at the time) and others, it has been notoriously difficult to make an objective and impartial assessment of Anne Boleyn however Ives succeeds in bringing the true character of Anne Boleyn to life using a variety of sources, challenges biased accounts of Anne's life (such as Chapuys' accounts of the ailing marriage) and also presents compelling evidence to support his assertions, such as the controversy surrounding Anne's birth date.
Whilst at times, Ives presents the not so endearing qualities of Anne Boleyn, on the whole ... Read More:

. Elizabeth and Leicester
City Travel Guides > Books > British Royalty
by: Sarah Gristwood
February 12, 2008
There are certain themes in history that have captured the imagination, whose heroes and heroines escape from dusty pages and occupy a place in our own times. At every point in between the same stories and people have their tales told, with an interpretation that fits the relevant age. Of all the kings and queens of England, one has held the hearts of her subjects for longer than any other - Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen.
Either by her own deft knack of public relations, or by the expert spinning of her advisers, the Queen of England was a legend in her own time. Her portrait was standardised, and is as recognisable today as it was four centuries ago. The idea of her being married to the kingdom, both her virginity and devotion intact, has endured through the ages.

. Prince Rupert: The Last Cavalier
City Travel Guides > Books > British Royalty
by: Charles Spencer
May 29, 2008
I purchased `Rupert' as a piece of furniture: for its cover not its content. Though I read many histories and biographies, I was not interested in the subject. Having positioned it proudly on my coffee table, I presumed my relationship with the book was over. It was by chance that I opened its cover to the first page; it was by contrivance of this author of enormous skill that I did not close it until I had reached the last.
Charles Spencer is a marvellous writer of history. His clearly painstaking research is worn lightly as he walks the reader through his subject like an experienced guide leading a tour group through the Louvre. He combs out all the distractions, easing the reader's journey and adding lustre to his naturally lucid and graceful style of writing. His analysis is as compassionate ... Read More:
