. The Silver Spoon
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Various
October 14, 2005
My step father was an Italian restauranteur and had a copy of this same book in Italian throughout his career. He even had it rebound a few years back. During his life he ran a hotel in Rome and cooked for cardinals that came there from the vatican using recipes from the Silver spoon.
I was therefore thrilled when this came out in English and so far have bought 3 copies so that both my daughters have them for their homes. They use them daily. Not only is this the authentic cookery book for Italian food lovers it is amazingly economical, utilising seasonal fresh foods and not that many ingredients unlike so many newer recipes.
Risotto with carrots for example is fantastically creamy as the carrot is pureed. Highly ... Read More:

. Francesco's Kitchen
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Francesco Da Mosto
October 11, 2007
This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

. The Vegeterranean: Italian Vegetarian Cooking
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Malu Simoes, Alberto Musacchio
March 03, 2008
I feel compelled to write a short note to counter some of the enthusiasm of this book's (and the restaurant's) devotees. I have not eaten at the restaurant in Italy, so I can't vouch for its delights, but I ordered this book with some anticipation, and was very disappointed. While it appears that many like the design/photography of this volume, I found it really dated. The colour is over-saturated, the food styling uber-seventies, the format over-large and ostentatious, the paper glossy and off-putting to handle... This, quite apart from the recipes which are over-complicated and old-fashioned looking. They remind me of some 'gourmet' vegetarian food I had in Rome once, which was enough to put me off veggie food for life. So stylised - and not in a good way! ... Read More:

. Eating Up Italy: Voyages on a Vespa
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Matthew Fort
June 20, 2005
Matthew Fort's epic scooter ride up the thigh-boot of Italy is a truly delicious read. Every aspect of the fascinating and varied Italian life he encountered is amusingly reflected upon in his lightly erudite prose. I thought his acknowledgement of feeling homesick (unlike Thesiger et al) was particularly endearing and the description of his amateurish Vespa riding in Naples most entertaining.Mr Fort was the restaurant critic for The Guardian, a foodie professional, but the gusto with which he describes the various meals he was presented with en route shows a boyish enthusiast peeping through the culinary afficionado. The recipes, which are added to each chapter-ending, are splendidly simple but totally mouthwatering. What Mr Fort has managed to do is deftly mix an ... Read More:

. Simple Italian Cookery
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Aldo Zilli
July 14, 2005
a range of recipes some of which you will have seen before. I think the strength of this book is that it is so small (i.e. there's not hundreds of recipes) and so all it contains are dishes you'd actually want to cook and, possibly more importantly, those you can cook.
Unlike other cook books, Aldo doesnt just show you the finished product and give you instructions on how to get there, he also gives you photographs of what the dish should look like at various stages so this gives you some condfidcence that what you are doing is right.
If you've never cooked Italian before (and I have) then this is a good book to get you started - a book full of simple cooking, simply put !

. "The Sopranos" Family Cookbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Allen Rucker
October 03, 2002
Someone bought me this as a present, as I am very fond of 'The Sopranos'. The formula is to present a series of recipes allegedly edited by Artie Bucco with interjections from various Sopranos regulars (Janice remembering mealtimes at home as a child, Carmela on entertaining for a large number of guests, Tony giving his views on the conduct of a sucessful barbecue, Bobby defending food for the big guy, and so on). Compared to the series it's unsubtle, but fun too, and well illustrated with pictures of the cast and some of the dishes. Certainly one to recommend to afficianados. Oh, and the recipes do work ; I've tried some of them.

. Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Giada de Laurentiis
February 22, 2005
Those of us who watch Food Network are familiar with some of the top names in cooking, and Giada De Laurentiis comes up in the Top 10 list. Her presentation skills, youth appearance wearing a low-cut top attracts many viewers and her cooking techniques are simple and choice of the recipes on her show is marginal. Yet for those of us who are interested in Italian cooking with an American touch, we have to look for her recopies. Until now we had to depend on recipes published on the Food Network. In this long-awaited first book, she does the same as she does on her show - helps you put Italian dinner on the table for friends or just for the kids with a minimum effort and a maximum of flavor. The book reveals sevaral ways to make red sauce, Pesto and Polenta. The price ... Read More:

. The Classic 1000 Italian Recipes
City Travel Guides > Books > Italian
by: Christina Gabrielli
March 30, 2002
This recipe book is a superb addition to anyone's culinary library - clearly not every recipe will suit every person but it is inconceivable that you would not find a significant number of useful recipes in here and even if you found just one nugget, then considering the price, it would be well worth it.
The variety of recipes in any of the 1000 series is simply staggering - to say you are stuck for choice is an understatement - but this particular one includes a great many vegetarian dishes too.
Ok, so there are no photographs but against that, the books don't cost a fortune either and they are compact.
You really cannot go wrong with any of these recipe books and when you consider they cost little more than 1 issue of pretty much ... Read More:
