An exhaustively researched but generally very readable biography. In a few places (esp. the chapters on image, art and costume) the level of detail does get a little too much, but this is a testament to the author's endeavours. It is difficult to see how this can be bettered as a biography of this subject, absent the discovery of some significant new primary source.

This was a really well written and entertaining book. However, the author presupposes a lot of prior knowledge which I sadly lacked, making some of the material a bit challenging - probably not the best choice of read for the inexperienced but I have learned a great deal from reading it. There is a good chance that I'll do so again.

I was a bit disappointed by the balance of the content. I felt there is a disproportionate ammount of text devoted to the social history of the period and too little on the meaty political and military events, e.g the wars of the French revolution. I also thought that given that the book does not flow in strict chronological order then it would have really benefited from the inclusion of a simple summary chapter ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > Books > Renaissance- Reformation- Thirty Years War 1501-1750
by: William Doyle

August 23, 2001
Fans of this series of books will know that most are very good, a few are duds, and a fair number are amazingly good. Professor Doyle's review of one of the major events in European history is firmly in that last category.

It is both an account of the events themselves and an overview of how they have been interpreted. The subject is complex and has aroused strong opinions across the ideological spectrum. Doyle gives all sides a fair hearing, but with the occasional wry comment that hints at where his own sympathies lie. The emphasis throughout is on the broader historic context rather than being an attempt to cram details into a short introduction. Both readers new to the subject and those looking for a review of where studies in the area now ... Read More:

I really loved Lisa Jardine's 'Going Dutch'. Compelling, thought-provoking and meticulously researched, this is a fascinating study of a larger culture that connected England and Holland in the seventeenth century. Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated, I was completely captivated.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Enlightenment
.The Enlightenment
City Travel Guides > Books > Renaissance- Reformation- Thirty Years War 1501-1750
by: Norman Hampson

June 28, 1990
I picked up this book as someone in search of a broad introduction to the Enlightenment rather than as an expert and it served that purpose very well. Lucidly written it outlines the chronology, the themes and the characters which together made the 18th century so significant.

Hampson is an entertaining as well as educative writer and, it would seem to me at least, chose to give more time to individuals that he found interesting than their contribution might strictly have made appropriate. I especially liked his inclusion of the bloodthirsty De Maistre, who he describes as having a religion 'more Aztec than Christian'.

I dare say that there have been more recent overviews of the Enlightement written, but this is definitely worth reading. Apart from ... Read More:

I would recommend this book to any A-level student studying the period 1688 - 1789. This book is very good for background knowledge and making notes. The author offers tantalising insights into France.

I was dubious at first at buying a history book which covers such a large period, but the author meet all my expectations. In easy to find chapters and sections exploring France on an international and administrative level.
