. Infidel
City Travel Guides > Books > Post-war Period- 1946-Present
by: Ayaan Hirsi Ali
March 03, 2008
It's rare to find autobiography as absorbing as this. Not only because of the author's unusual path from the desert of Somalia to the USA via the Netherlands, but also on account of the absorbing writing style. Clear and descriptive, the narrative of her eventful life had a profound impact on this reader. Born and raised in Somalia, Ayaan spent part of her youth in neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Kenya, recounting what it was like to live there through the eyes of a child.
She gives a lively account of the history of Somalia under the dictatorship of Siad Barre, explaining the clan system and comparing the relaxed Muslim practice in that country with the rigidy of Saudi Arabia and the hypocrisy and racism ... Read More:

. The European Union: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
City Travel Guides > Books > Post-war Period- 1946-Present
by: John Pinder, Simon Usherwood
December 13, 2007
The EU is a very complex organisation and Pinder provides a clear, structured description, starting with the historical background of the EU's predecessor organisations, moving through its structure and institutions through to key issues such as budget and CAP, and social policy. His explanation of the difference between a federal approach and inter-governmentalism is particularly interesting to Brits, and he makes the UK's position and actions (and those of others) clear in context. The principles underlying the EU's creation, development and functioning are clearly explained. My major criticism, though, is that so much has happened to the EU since the book's publication - the launch of the ... Read More:

. Baader-Meinhof Complex
City Travel Guides > Books > Post-war Period- 1946-Present
by: Stefan Aust
November 06, 2008
In this book, Figes has diluted and refined his mastery of the art of weaving historical sources together. These family narratives which, without this book, would certainly have been lost, provide a compelling insight into the reality of Soviet Russia - the 'historical' backdrop of dates and movements takes a back seat to the gritty honesty of real people's testimony of what living through this era was actually like.
A fantastic read.

. Putin's Russia
City Travel Guides > Books > Post-war Period- 1946-Present
by: Anna Politkovskaya
October 14, 2004
Anna Politkovskaya hates Akaky Putin. Really hates him. She says so in one of the final chapters, speaking as a Muscovite who has no desire to relive the Soviet union of the 70s and 80s.
This is a brave and shocking book. It is basically several chapters listing the ills of Russia under Putin. It is worth noting at this point that a lot of the troubles started under Yeltsin but Putin's inertia or even condoning of the situation has exacerbated the problems greatly.
It starts with the Russian army, committing horrific crimes in Chechnya in the name of counter-terrorism. One chapter deals with the rape and murder of a village girl by a drunken colonel. What makes this story worthy of note is not the crimes, but the fact that the colonel was actually ... Read More:

. The Berlin Wall: 13 August 1961 - 9 November 1989
City Travel Guides > Books > Post-war Period- 1946-Present
by: Frederick Taylor
September 03, 2007
This book could best be described as schizophrenic. It starts off with a detailed history of Germany going back to the time of the Vikings, and explains the post-war geography of Europe in vivid detail; the Berlin Wall isn't even built until about the half-way stage. Once the wall is built, however, the book feels like it was rushed and over-simplified. There is plenty of description of the many attempts to breakout of East Germany to West Berlin but there is insufficient detail as to why East Germany failed and for all the talk of how the Wall divided families there is little social and human history here which would explain the desperation of the East Germans. The events of November 1989, when the wall was finally pulled down, are rushed through at indecent pace, only about ... Read More:
