I studied this text as the core for my module on middle english language as part of my degree, although turville-petre offers some good information about dialect and other linguistic aspects in his introduction, some of the selections of excerpts from texts are quite week and I felt it would have been better had he chosen more dynamic sections which exmplify the pieces rather than just the opening lines, especially with pieces such as Sir Gawain and The Green Knight

By taking a thematic approach to the Byzantine Empire, Ms Herrin illuminates some interesting areas. However, you will need to have some background of the history of the Empire if you are to properly understand the points she makes.
John Julius Norwich's 3 vol history is the perfect place to start.

By taking a thematic approach to the Byzantine Empire, Ms Herrin illuminates some interesting areas. However, you will need to have some background of the history of the Empire if you are to properly understand the points she makes.

An excellent and highly informative book. Southern has given it a near-perfect title, as he covers every aspect of the development of the feudal polity of Europe, from the religious to the political and military. His writing is simple and easy to understand, whilst still being intelligent and sometimes even witty. He is unafraid to present his own theories and conclusions, whilst reserving for the reader the right to agree or disagree. Southern often cites the examples of individuals from the past- be they bishops, princesses, beggars or travellers- to illustrate his points; this adds a fascinating third dimension to the writing that some history texts are sorely lacking. This book focuses on a fascinating period, but the camera (i.e. Historian Christopher Hibbert) is a polaroid camera, so the image is not particularly sharp and enchanting.
As I read this book I realised that it could have been written by almost anyone in a university history department. It didn't have a disntinctive style or anything particular to say.
