I devoured this book in days..it is a thoroughly addictive page turner!
The momentum was compelling and the characters all so loveable (though Cassandra was probably my secret favourite). I read The House at Riverton last year and it's one of my fave books ever - The Forgotten Garden is an excellent second novel from this very talented author. This is a compelling and beautifully written family mystery and I will be recommending it to all my friends and colleagues.

. The Book Thief
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Markus Zusak

This book is very hard to read. The writer tried so hard to tell us the story from the point of view of a ghost, and tried very hard to be inventive, as some reviewers said. But it is NOT. In recent years, we have got the American Beauty which is written exactly the same way. This is a bad copy at that.
From the pure literary point of view, this is a bad book, because of these factors: the narrator is too remote, and unbelievable, the story is weak for the readers. It is anything but engaging. There is no urge in me when I turned the pages. If it is not for the fact that I paid for it, I would not go beyond page 50. So it is definitely not a page-turner.
The writer also tried very hard to give the book a mood of depression. ... Read More:

. The Road Home

This is a very good book and a thought provoking read. As a Londoner, living in London I have `immigrants' living and working all around me, but to be honest I don't take much notice of them. This book gives a voice to people like this... the people who some of us don't notice. Lev is a hard working man from an Eastern European country. He wants to earn money and he doesn't mind working for it. He wants to send money back for his mother and daughter and doesn't want to be on benefits. I think a lot of immigrants in London and the UK are like this ... no matter what the Daily Mail says! I thought Rose Tremain (who is one of my favourite writers - my favourites being Music and Silence and Restoration, both very different to this book!) wrote the voice of a man ... Read More:

. This Charming Man
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Marian Keyes
April 30, 2008
This is so disappointing. The bar is always high for Marian Keyes and this isn't a bad book, but...... It could have been so much better. Good central plot and some interesting characters but sloppily edited. Is the problem that Marian is so famous and such a good seller that her publishers don't dare tell her the truth?
The book needs cutting and some careful editing. It also needs to lose the diary style which is inconsistent, irritating and unneccessary. If you want to know how to do diary, then read Alison Pearson.
Please don't do this again Marian. You are one of the best around and this was rambling and undisciplined.

. The Beach House
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period

What a lovely summer read this is - a real tonic; one to kick off your flip-flops to and relax with over a glass of wine. Lovely.
The story is centred around Nan, an eccentric 65 year old living in a beach house in Nantucket by herself. That summer she decides to rent out rooms and invite some laughter and joy back into the house. Here we meet Daff, Daniel and Michael who are all trying to get away from something. They bond over home cooked meals, chats on the veranda, and cycles along the beach and each one slowly starts to realise that there is more to life than the rat race they have come from. There are a few surprises thrown in too to keep us on our toes.
Jane Green has done it again - a lovely light breezy read and what is more perfect for ... Read More:

. Fearless Fourteen

June 17, 2008
This is the funniest Stephanie Plum novel there's been for a long time. This time Stephanie has to track down a petty thief called Loretta, who unfortunately is kidnapped. Stephanie ends up babysitting Loretta's son Mario. Loretta's crazy brother Dom thinks that Joe Morelli is the father of Loretta's son. He also thinks that Morelli has nine million dollars buried under his house.
Mario (otherwise known as Zook) is something of a problem. first there is his passion for playing a computer game called Minionfire, and soon he has infected Grandma Mazur and all her friends with his passion. Then there is his mania for spray-painting everything with graffiti, including Morelli's dog.
There are various other complications, and the story just kept making ... Read More:

. Wedding Season
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Katie Fforde
June 05, 2008
This book is gorgeous romantic froth & I loved it. How does Fforde manage to make her heroines real women, juggling jobs, families, relationships, and yet, her men are pure fantasy figures? Still single & straight in their 30s, bruised by love but not bitter, kind, helpful & sexy all at the same time. Sarah is a wedding planner who doesn't believe in romance; Elsa, a dressmaker who needs some self confidence; and Bron, a hairdresser with a boorish boyfriend who wants to make some changes in her life. When a Hollywood celebrity hires Sarah to plan her perfect wedding, Sarah is eager to take up the challenge, with help from Elsa & Bron. Then, her younger sister, Lily, announces that her wedding is planned for the same day, and could Sarah help her plan the perfect ... Read More:

. The Pirate's Daughter
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Margaret Cezair-Thompson
June 12, 2008
I took this book with me to read on holiday and the opening chapters describing the white sandy beaches, palm trees and fragrant bourgenvilla had me melting into my sun bed.
This book is a wonderful story about a teenage girl, Ida, on the island of Jamaica and her crush on film star Errol Flynn who befriends her Father and sets up residence on the island. Flynn takes a shine to Ida and seduces her and she then finds herself pregnant by him at the age of 16. The story then follows both Ida and her daughter, May, through the next 30 years including civil unrest and shocking violence on their beloved sushine island.
Cezair-Thompson has a wonderfully fresh voice which made me really warm to the fantastic array of characters. I have rated 4 stars as I felt that ... Read More:
