I do love Dalgliesh mysteries. This one is no exception. I don't want to give away the mystery itself, but it's magnificently set in Dorset, an ancient manor, but with a very modern vehicle for the mystery: plastic surgery.....

My one and only dissapointment with this novel was figuring out who the murderer was way to early..... I guess I've read to many PDJames' lol!

On the plus side, without giving the plot away, was the character development.
Kate is heavily featured. She's my fav side character!!! I do wish there would be a "passing the torch to Kate novel......." She's got some complications to her love life....
Benton-Smith seems to be maturing into a more wellrounded character.

No Time For Goodbye

I have to say, I enjoyed this book immensly as a page-turning sun-bed read. My only real critisism is the last page. What a load of rubbish. You'd have to read the book to understand what I mean, but basically, we are supposed to believe that after her 14 year old daughter is dragged home stinking drunk after sneaking off out to 'go parking' with the local bad boy, the mother writes her a soppy letter all about how much she loves her, and that even after she (the mother) is dead she'll always be watching over her. Yeah right! What I find even harder to believe is that no other reviewers have picked up on this, the one thing that ruined the whole book for me.

This is just as good as the other two books, wolf of the plains & lord of the bow, Book one is the best in it's own wright as a great start to a fantastic series, just buy them all you would not regret it as you cannot put the book down.

As ever, I was looking forward to the latest Tempe Brennan story. Ahead of Cornwell in the forensic anthropologist stakes, in my view but now I'm beginning to wonder. At first, I thought I'd somehow missed out a book. I don't remember Ryan leaving her in the lurch, I don't remember the dog leaving home but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, this book doesn't flow like the others. There's plenty of forensic detail, several bodies to be explained and a few more currently taken care of by the killer.

What I don't quite get is how an anthropologist becomes the number one detective. As though the police hardly make a difference for without Brennan, the case would not be solved. Which, of course, means her life is threatened once again. But this ... Read More:

I was so looking forward to this book, but I found it sadly lacking in... well, passion, I suppose. Mary Queen of Scots is a fascinating historical character, but she comes across as a bit of a wet blanket in this.

While the three voices thing worked well in "The Boleyn Inheritance", it is a bit repetitive here. We get the message early on that Bess is only interested in hanging onto her wealth. We really don't need to be told time after time how worried she is about losing the church silver again.

George and his honour become fairly wearing after the first hundred pages. The only interesting bits for me were the invented dialogues between the characters. But yeah, nice dust jacket and I always like a ribbon thing to keep my ... Read More:

My only wish is that I could read it in the original Swedish as the only flaws in this book were the occasional translation errors. All in all though, a superb read. I was up till 3am finishing it last night and have recommended it to all my friends. I'm looking forward to the remaining books in the trilogy and will definitely be adding them to my Xmas/birthday present wishlist.

One of the three main characters in this book is a sleight of hand specialist. Zal Innez previously appeared in the excellent `The Sacred Art of Stealing' alongside Angelique De Xavia, the policewoman who hunted him down, then let him escape because she loved him. His stagecraft is a metaphor for this book insofar as NOTHING is as it seems and author Christopher Brookmyre stuns us regularly throughout with a whole series of brilliant set-pieces of misdirection.

This book started off really well, the characters were believable and the plot was interesting enough to get me hooked. When the plans for revenge were unfolded between the two women, I couldn't put the book down. I wanted to see what they were going to do to him and with each new drama, I was drawn further and further in as James' life unfolds dramatically around him with seemingly no idea who's behind it all. But then something odd happens, it's almost as if the author had a change of heart half way through because the story goes from this, to a less dramatic story of a woman getting over the break up of her marriage and moving on to a new relationship. I loved the book the Righteous men and after finishing it went and bought the Last Testament. Although I loved the first book, the second did nothing for me. This book had blown me away. I just cant put it down.

Well worth a read.
