City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Goblin Market (Dover Thrift)
.Goblin Market (Dover Thrift)
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Christina Rossetti

1994-08
I read this book because it was on my Uni reading list, and I loved it. Rossetti's poems are powerful pieces of work that cover a variety of subjects: nature, the poet's own religion, and the relationships between men, women and families. They appeal both to emotion and intellect, and are well worth reading.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Penguin Book of Modern British Short Stories
.The Penguin Book of Modern British Short Stories
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Malcolm Bradbury

February 25, 1988
In the introduction, the editor, Malcom Bradbury, sets out his intention in producing this collection: one was to 'display...the achievement of some the best work produced by the strongest of...recent Britsh authors'; and the other, what Bradbury claims to be a more difficult task, to be 'broadly representative, so that the book might give not only a reasonable idea of the variety, but also the general trends and directions that have been taken by British fiction in the years since 1945'.

Bradbury succeeds in both attempts. This is not paritcularly surprising since this is Bradbury's territory. The collection contains works by some of the biggest names in British Literature: William Golding, Samuel Beckett, Graham Greene, ... Read More:

by: Stephen Leather

January 24, 2008
Having been an avid reader of McNnab & Chris Ryan, i thought i'd look at something else while waiting for either author to release a new read. I chanced upon Stephen Leather and have since bought a whole load of his books. Brilliant plots, superb twists and turns - true thriller, come military/police novels. Expertly written - and i will never look back. The Dan Shepherd mystery series is superb, I'm just waiting for the next installment!!!

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Heart of Darkness (Norton Critical Editions)
.Heart of Darkness (Norton Critical Editions)
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Conrad

February 10, 2006
"Heart of Darkness", Conrad's story itself, is no easy read. The language is heavy as poetry and undoubtedly as beautiful. In this critical edition you'll find background information about Conrad's journey through Africa, the historical period, collections of relevant images as well as very valuable critical essays on key themes and passages of piece. If you're at all interested in understanding this text, or if you intend to write about it in any great length in the form of essays, buy this book. It's worth it, and will help you to better appreciate especially the symbolism Conrad uses.

.Songs of Innocence and Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul (Oxford Paperbacks)
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: William Blake

October 15, 1970
William Blake is one of the most influencial poets in history, and would make my list of top five poets ever any day of the week. 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' is his most famous and highly regarded set of poems, and rightly so too. 'Innocence and Experience' is unique in so far as there are a lot of poems with duplicate titles, but both poems will be from a completely different viewpoint, a different time in life; the poems from 'Innocence' will often reflect happiness and optimism etc, whereas the counterpart 'Expreience' poem will refelct completely the opposite, this allows Blake of course to make rather poignant comments on the corruption of innocence, as well as a lot of rather biting observations on 17th century society and in particular ... City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Edward Bond

April 13, 2000
This play is unique. When first reading it i thought that it was gross and it made me cry. But when analysing it and realising what edwawd bond was doing it made me find the book interesting anda very clever way to write a book. He isntactually talking about a baby getting killed his main effect is to show the audience what society is like today, and it really does happen. He is trying to make people look and see what is happening instead of hiding from the bad things that go on in society today

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Love Lies Bleeding

by: Kate Thompson

2008-06
Kept this to read on holiday and started it on the flight, didn't even realise we had landed and was most unhappy to have to stop reading. Yet again Kate Thompson didn't disappoint. It was so nice to catch up with all the well known and loved characters and be introduced to a new one. Found myself quite upset when Deirdre was unhappy, I am so very fond of the "O'Dare/McDonagh" Family. Hope there is more on the way. Kate can't write quickly enough for me!!

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Rape of the Lock (Vintage Classics)
.The Rape of the Lock (Vintage Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Alexander Pope

August 02, 2007
"The Rape of the Lock" (1714) is a major contribution to a long, on-going series of literary games played with tone and structure. Wherever the great epic poets of Greece and Rome have been prized a sort of reflex has generated parodial imitations. The language of Homer's "Odyssey" and "Iliad" and the "Aeneid" of Virgil is so serious about humanity and its destiny that it virtually defies the reader to remember that human life is as much concerned with very small things as it is with gods and men and the course of history. The Europe of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries could boast a wealth of writers quick to join the game of writing a mock epic. Italy's Alessandro Tassoni, for instance, wrote "La Secchia Rapita" (1622), in which the people of Bologna ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Rapture
.Rapture
City Travel Guides > Books > Irish
by: Carol Ann Duffy

September 01, 2006
Who said the love poem is dead? Carol Ann Duffy's Rapture stands with shining silver defiance against any such assertion.

Starting with one of my all-time favourite poems, "You", Duffy writes "the thought of you stayed too late in my head/so I went to bed, dreaming you hard". The collection moves with quiet ease, showcasing Duffy's natural inclination to form and rhyme, through to the final line "a gift, the blush of memory".

The poems in this book are all love poems, although love is written about in all its various colours, from intense longing and the grief of separation, to love as a great redeeming power.

Duffy is so important as a figure in contemporary poetry, one of the few living poets who actually manages to sell ... Read More:
