. The Game
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Neil Strauss
December 06, 2007
What a discovery!!! I bought this book as part of some research for my own book and I was very pleasantly surprised.
I never made the connection that Mr Strauss was the co-author of the much lauded Motley Crue's "The Dirt".
Ok, the stories in this book may seem a bit stretched or hard to believe, but hey, it's Americans we are talking about. What I have to say is that reading this book made me look back on my failures and successes at picking women, and it was almost uncanny to read word by word where I went right and wrong.
The Game is a bit of a cross between Queer Eye For The Straight Guy cum Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus cum any rock and roll tale of debauchery you care to think of.

. Introducing NLP Neuro-Linguistic Programming
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Joseph O'Connor, John Seymour
2003-01
This book is an excellent introduction to NLP and presents all the core concepts in an accurate way. NLP is a very wide-ranging theory but this author has managed to introduce the core framework very cogently. Perhaps there could have been more diagrams and illustrations, and perhaps a little less jargon too - but as NLP has so much of its own terminology it's difficult to see how this could be avoided. I would have liked to read a little more about time perception too, after reading Steve Taylor's excellent book Making Time, which looks at why time seems to speed up and slow down (and even completely disappear) in different situations.

. The Art of Dying
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Peter Fenwick, Elizabeth Fenwick
June 30, 2008
A fascinating book which contains much persuasive anecdotal material. Unfortunately in Chapter 11 the authors feel they have to deal with the question of paradigm shift in the scientific community and their philosophical (I cannot speak for their scientific) arguments are less successful. They MAY be justified in their conclusions - I pray that they are - but there is a long journey ahead before any meaningful PROOF can be attained. Nonetheless, a very significant contribution to the debate.

. McMafia: Crime Without Frontiers
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Misha Glenny
April 03, 2008
This a frightening but fascinating book, which brings together the keen-eyed journalism Glenny displayed in the 1990s, with a tale of the kind of organised crime that touches us all, whether we know it or not.
Glenny tours the world, and wisely does not try his hand at thriller-writing as he does so. The stories, and their contexts, are fascinating enough to be simply laid out before us. In each case, the most compelling parts are the history and analysis of how that kind of crime took off, in that place and that time. While there are undercurrents that are common throughout, what stands out starkly are the location and era-specific details of the conditions that allow major crime to flourish. I would have liked to have seen something more about how these ... Read More:

. Flat Earth News: An Award-winning Reporter Exposes Falsehood, Distortion and Propaganda in the Global Media
City Travel Guides > Books > Social Sciences
by: Nick Davies
February 07, 2008
Today newspapers are run purely for profit. This means that numbers of reporters are being cut. This means that they can't get out into the world and build contacts that will help them unearth stories. This means that, by and large, they have time to just sit at a desk and recycle (sometimes just plain re-use) stories from:
1. News agencies, who feel it's not their job to interpret anything, merely report it, so no fact checking. This stuff goes straight into papers and broadcast media without being checked.
2. PR. PR agencies who work for organisations send out press releases, which by definition will not be fair or balanced. And that goes straight into the news too. Interestingly, there's also the issue of 'Astroturf' groups: supposedly 'grass-roots' movements and organisations ... Read More:
