I purchased this book on the strength of the review above and I was certainly not disappointed. This beautifully crafted book contains a collection of letters, notes and even texts of not only romantic exchanges but sometimes painful break ups. I particulary loved this book as it is very modern - no Jane Austin here - so it felt much more relevent. Highly recommend it - although have the tissues handy!

If you are reading this review while you are sat at you desk pretending to work then this book is for you!

Read it in conjunction with Paul E Willis's 'Common Culture: Symbolic Work at Play in the Everyday Cultures of the Young' and you've finally got a political and thoretical justification for doing more or less whatever you want.

Thoroughly enjoyed this and you will too if you like an unpredictable novel with a slowish pace and strong characterization. The descriptions were so vivid I felt I knew Savannah by the time I'd finished (would love to go now). I think the slow pace at the beginning cleverly suggests the lazy and languid way of life in the south and is not meant as a criticism, stay with it the pace speeds up.

This is a must read for anyone planning a long term visit to Switz. I have taken up an assignment in Switz for a period of 18 months and found this book very useful. It has eased my stress of visiting a new country for the first time.

The contents are logically arranged and the language used is simple and plain english.

I've always had a great love of our fantastic British Coastline. It has always been my ambition to carry out the complete tour. Perhaps one day I will achieve the ambition! For the meantime I will have to make do with the books and the DVD's! I notice that the first book "coast" received some criticism by the reviewers here on Amazon so I was keen to check out if the 'grumbles' applied to the 2nd volume "The Journey Continues". As far as I'm concerned I have no complaints at all...this is a wonderful book. It contains 16 area tours in all starting from the south coast working in a clockwise fashion from Dover ending up and finishing in London. I am a voracious reader of anything to do with the lives of ordinary people during and immediately after the post war period and this is an absolutely fascinating book. It feels as if you are looking over the shoulders of the people writing the diaries and these diaries (by modern standards) pull no punches. Much of what is said is both politically incorrect (and hooray for that) and especially, with the opinions about Jewish people, deeply upsetting and disturbing.

Like many others, I bought the book because I had thoroughly enjoyed the TV programme. The TV programme covered areas of the coastline which I have enjoyed visting - but they were missing from the book! The pictures, though sometimes excellent photographs, were nowhere near as good as the TV images. The worst aspect for me, however, was the way in which the text (fairly uninspired when compared with the TV commentary) was printed in a sans-serif font over a grey background showing a map of the British coast. It is therefore very difficult to read, and, as pointed out above, not really worth the effort. Why could the BBC not have produced a book in the same league as the one accompanying the British Isles - natural history. A missed opportunity!

I bought this book for a friend, but kept it myself after being impressed by its dip-into-ability, its authority, readability and the fact that it is clearly the product of considerable research. The author has drawn widely in his search for the origins of English customs and is not afraid to dispense with a few myths along the way: if there is no evidence that a custom 'has its origins in the Middle Ages' he'll say so. An impressive piece of work.
