Sniper One: The Blistering True Story of a British Battle Group Under Siege
I have literally just finished this book 10 minutes ago - i am a person that does not usually enjoy reading, i am a person that enjoys films and games. But i decided to buy this book, and what a fantastic decision that was.
This true story is exemplary, i am almost lost for words to describe this book, It is a supremely perfect balance of all out war, mixed in with feelings, emotions, descriptions. It all ties in perfectly, there is not a boring sentence in this book. By the end of the book, you can't help but sit there and be so incredibly proud to be British and have such fantastic troops fighting for your country, it is impossible ... Read More:

. The Art of War
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Sun Tzu, Sun Zi
May 01, 2006
I was expecting a huge tome full of Confuscian statements which are allegorical to warfare. What I received was a 69-page book of short instructions which are dirrectly about warfare, but in many cases allegorical to life.
Possibly they're all in some way applicable to the day-to-day, the fighting with fire section does seem a bit specialised, but doubtless the scales will fall from my eyes at some stage and I will be able to use its teachings in buying tangerines from waitrose.
The best thing about the book is the ability to spice up conversation. Never again will I use a hackneyed marketing phrase where something from Sun Tzu will work. Brilliant.

. The Railway Man
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence

Without doubt the finest book I've ever read. Anybody who can read this without tear staining the pages has no soul or emotions.
It starts slowly showing a boy who is awkward because he doesn't share the normal interests of youth but it develops through his age experience and the horrors he endures to provide a man of intense intelligence compassion and the ultimate forgiveness to provide us all with a desire to do the best we can, and yes I'm crying as I write this review. I've just ordered a new copy as my other one is very dog eared.

. Hitler's Empire: Nazi Rule in Occupied Europe (Allen Lane History)
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Mark Mazower
June 05, 2008
It's easy to work out if you'll like this book. The subject is, how did Nazi Germany administer and rule the countries they conquered and annexed? If you're already rolling your eyes and struggling to keep a yawn down, then clearly this book is not for you. On the other hand, if like me, you think, "wow, what an interesting subject," then you will probably like this book, and it should fulfil your expectations with ease. I only skipped about four pages about France's art scene and underground politics, and a page at the end that waffled on about the post war economy, so it's not a dull difficult to read book.
It goes into a fair amount of detail of how each country was handled differently. Eastern countries like Russia and Poland ... Read More:

. Bomber Boys: Fighting Back 1940-1945
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Patrick Bishop
March 03, 2008
It is very easy to lament the work done by Bomber Command in the mid to end years of the Second World War in Europe. This book does just that. But it also delves into the hearts of those who flew the bombers, the emotions of those who let loose the bomb doors, the feelings of those who shot at night-fighters. And the book's great achievement is in presenting a view that not only helps us understand the great personal sacrifice these men made, but the even greater emotional sacrifice they have suffered since the end of the war.
With some glaring grammatical mistakes, the book's editors should be sacked, but all in all, this is a highly endearing yet incisive account of one of the ugliest aspects of war, yet an aspect that greatly hastened the ... Read More:

. Sisters In Arms: British Army Nurses Tell Their Story
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Nicola Tyrer
February 28, 2008
Finally a book that tells the story of the remarkable women nurses in WW2. From the first page the reader is immediately transported to the world that these women were part of. From their nursing training to the weird and wonderful details of their uniform.
If you think you know what nurses such as these did in WW2, then think again. The horrors they endured and the terrible situations they found themselves in will shock the reader and leave you with nothing but admiration for their spirit and bravery.
The book has plenty of quotes and paragraphs from the women themselves, and/or diary entries from that time. A few of the women are featured throughout the book, and the reader will find themselves taken vividly back to that time and seeing ... Read More:

. Eyewitness Auschwitz: Three Years in the Gas Chamber
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Filip Muller
August 24, 1999
Truly the worst holocaust testimony ever written. So many mistakes throughout the whole text. Two examples of which were when Mr Muller mentions the camp orchestra in Birkenau, there was none.He also quotes that Kramer was in Birkenau and had came from Auschwitz 2.Both are one and the same place But important errors like these were repeated in every chapter and the worry for me is that Holocaust deniers may pick up on these simple blunders.Mr Mullers over use of adjectives and repetition of statements at times resulted in the book bordering on being boring. It read more like a students written essay who wasnt fully informed ,rather than an actual Holocaust survivors memoirs.Ive read many more imformative Holocaust testimonies and even Mr Muller must have been disappointed ... . Sod That for a Game of Soldiers
City Travel Guides > Books > Warfare and Defence
by: Mark Eyles-Thomas
June 01, 2007
I feel i have to write in a retort to Jayetee's reveiw. The comments about the authour being rude and abusive, although being his/her personnel opinion should not stand.
I have recently laid the book down after what i can describe as one of the most moving accounts that i have ever digested.
Mark Eyles-Thomas served with the Parachute Regiment, calling all other members of the armed forces who did not earn the Maroon beret as HATS, is what is best described as banter, mickey taking and having a massive sense of self pride. What the Paras and other elite units do is not normal, these people are close, because of what they are asked to do; by people sat in their living rooms and cosy offices. Is the reviewer so naive as to think those HATS do not have their own ... Read More:
