Every chapter contradicts the last. It seems to be a mess of platitudes, no new ideas and, I'm sorry to say, a waste of time reading.

I thought I knew how to speak -- doesn't everyone? But Susan Berkeley really showed me how to use my voice more powerfully. She has great practical tips (like standing and focusing on one spot when making an important phone call) that really do work! I loved this book and have recommended it to others. Whether you want to come across as more intelligent or pursasive, this a terrific guide. And Susan is a great teacher too.

This book is dedicated to "Paula, 'bride' of my life", and this gives you an idea of the standard of the humour on offer here. The example speeches are cringe-makingly awful, and the example jokes range from outrageously inappropiate to bafflingly unfunny, through just plain corny. Many of them I would feel uncomfortable making in mixed company, let alone at my wedding (and I'm no prude). The one star I've given this book is because it motivated me to just get on and write my speech, because my efforts could never be worse than the examples in this book. If you're writing a speech I would advise you to do the same and just get on with it, but if you really want to get a book I'd suggest getting the "Confetti" book on wedding speeches- it's slightly ... I highly recommend this book. Not only does it give concise rules for grammar and punctuation it also helps establish some patterns in spelling. I found the descriptions of several common word-misuseages particularly entertaining and humerous - I found I was even guilty of some of them). I like the layout and it is a book that is easy to pick up and not put down for a long time.

Speech went well !

The book gives some good pointers, though much of the material you'll end up writing yourself. It is good for preparing the structure of the speech and managing the nerves !

I'm afraid the contents of this book are not much use to anyone who already has a good idea of what they have to do. It's a bit thin on actually helping you to do it. If you need to be told that certain topics should be avoided, then this may be helpful. But if you're looking for inspiration and possibly some useful lines to borrow - then look elsewhere.

As an aspiring actor I was looking for a book that could provide me with a good set of suggestions on how to improve the way I express myself. As David Mamet once wrote the way actors express through their voices is extremely important if they are to be "heard" by the audience. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to use their voices constantly be it on stage or off stage.

Taking part in a recent Cicely Berry workshop here in Australia reminded me how necessary this very simple but extremely vital book is in an actors training. The clarity with which both Berry and Nunn discuss the finer details of the profession clears up any head scratching confusion so many other techniques are often want to offer. This must surely rank amongst the Empty Space's and Impro's of this world where they will be studied in years to come.

Unfortunately, this book does not live up to its name. It has a nice introduction that briefly explains the origins of some of the wedding traditions. This was interesting, but not really what you want the book for. Especially as the author goes on to warn you about not showing off this knowledge in your speech!

The check list of duties is long, too long I think. The best, best-man that the author advocates seems far too pushy and nosey, always getting involved in everything. Nowadays, the bride and groom sort out most of the stuff he mentions. The best advice the author gives here is actually to ask the groom what he wants doing.
