Overall i think this product is aimed at the real beginner going on a trip to France with a chance to try out the language. Which is no bad thing at all. My French is moderate so i found the pack a bit basic. Some nice ideas and different ways to get ideas and phrases across, audio examples are very useful. Recommended for those who don't take kindly to just reading the text and are unable to translate what they read to the sounds/accent of the language.

Let me start with on a good point and say that michels technique is a true work of art
Its only when you have listened to the tapes a few times(and you will need to in order to completely digest it) that you realise how clever he is at making his point.
It really is as close as you can get to painless language tuition.
When I had ingested this course i was convinced that I could speek fluent french,however it is only the introductory course so you will be needing the avanced course after.Which is also exellent,and much more involved.
Now for the bad bit:
I can not for the life of me understand how Michel could have let the course be published with the female american student!!

I'm not a French speaker or learner myself, but bought this as a gift for a friend who is tackling the language. I'm sure they'll enjoy it as it's quite fun compared to the dry language texts I had to wade through at school. It's interesting to see that some French idioms are quite similar to ours but have an unusual slant. For example, where we have 'Pushing up the daisies', they have 'Eating the daisies from the roots up'; we write 'Rubber cheques', and they write 'wooden' ones (like taking a 'wooden nickel'?). Others are quite surreal 'Falling backwards into apples' sound quite painful, but to the French this is a soft landing. This book on Spanish verb tenses is the best I've ever seen. In fact, it is probably the only book of its kind. I haven't seen any other books like this one, probably because it would be a waste of time for someone else to write a book like this.

The book first explains the present tense in great detail. It explains how the present tense is used in every possibleway. Although, it doesn't explain that the present tense is often used to convey a future action more often than the actual future is.

Richmond's explanation of the past tenses is also very good, but I didn't like how the imperfect and the preterit were explained. What I did like was how the author explains that the irregular preterit conjugations have predictable patterns.

I have bought a number of spanish courses, from Michel Thomas (god bless his soul) to GCSE bitesize. Yet still I could not piece together a simple sentence, let alone a conversation. I have one or two friends who are fluent in speaking spanish, but when I tried to speak I turned into a blithering idiot - the words just wouldn't come out, my brain just wouldn't work fast enough. Then I read the reviews on quickstart Spanish and thought - I must give it a go! Even though my bookshelves are already groaning under the weight! This is an amazing item, I have tried many diferent techniques to learn Italian and this is by far the best. I really do encourage you to buy this you won't regret it. The voices used are really good as well, they saying everything clearly allowing you to understand quicker. The music is also an added bonus it allows the words to stick in your brain faster, and makes the experience alot more enjoyable. With this product its not a matter of having to use it, but you want to use it. Fantastic.

I have had the pleasure of visitng Spain or Spanish speaking countries many times and have a basic grasp of the language. So I got this to help me along in my efforts to learn a bit more. The course itself is easy to understand, well structured and not overly demanding on already learned skills. It is well presented and thought through. The tutors voices are easy to follow and I found it quite useful. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to learn some basic language skills before going to Spain, but can only recommend it as a starting point. From there on the joy of any language is in discovering it for youreself.
A good grounding like this will be a huge boost to your succesful learning.

As explained in the other reviews you get a two CD set and an A5 booklet with this pack.

It's all been nicely put together for the beginner (this is definitely aimed at the phrase book/ tourist market) and the stand alone CD is a good idea.
However the main problem with this is the inclusion of Tony Buzan's mind maps - I just can't see that they are helpful in learning a language.

It's also quite annoying that he lays claim to teaching techniques that really wouldn't surprise Plato or Socrates! If you can get past Buzan's self advertising this is a very well put together set and will put you well on the way to learning enough to get you by on a business trip or holiday.

Having struggled at learning Spanish for a few years, and not being able to devote a huge amount of time to it, it's important to make the most of the chances I do get.

The practice makes perfect series is ideal - you get loads of practice, varied exercises, and excellent translation sections, practicing translating a decent sized bit of text which is really helpful.

Pronouns and prepositions are ideally suited to this format, as there are so many different rules and ways to use these items that the only way to learn them is to get practice in doing so.

Highly recommended.
