The Elements of Style is a short, timeless and foundational book on writing style and grammar. It is exceptionally well written and an essential writers desk reference. The authors stripped away all the fluff and kept the best of the best to help anyone write more clearly and concisely.

If you are unsure about how to critically think, or pinpoint an argument, then get this book. It has plenty of excersises to help hone your skills, and I'm glad I got this book before going into 2nd Year Uni.

Definatley a must-have in my opinion.

I dont often write reviews but after recieving a 100% for my last asssignment by using this book, i thought i must write something. (My previous grades had ranged from 70-85%, so this was an incredible jump which i could never have dared hope for. In all of my assignments i knew my subject and was familiar with the various studies, but structuring and knowing how to put it all together is a different ballgame altogether. This is where Redman's book comes in.

I buy this book based in the advise of a friend that is an english teacher and the reviews that I read from amazon uk and amozon US. the book is very usefull for me. I never learn english from Class I learn english from HBO and Cinemax. Because of this I have a lot of problems with my grammar, I have quite a good vocabulary and my pronuntiation is pretty well, bt when I am writing... The problems appear this book help me a lot with that the study guide make me realize witch are my major mistakes and the cd is also pretty good. Well, what can I say? It's a dictionary!
It's pretty much a normal dictionary - and don't get fooled by the word 'pocket' because you'd have to have a pretty big pocket to put it in! BE WARNED.
I gave it 5 stars because it's a dictionary and it does it's purpose. What's good about it is that it gives extra things like Usage Notes, which include things like spelling confusion and meanings e.t.c.
It is a useful dictionary, clear to read, things like origins, formality, spelling tips, pronuncuation, e.t.c that help it to do it's job efficently.
All in all a good dictionary but if you don't have it it's not like you need to get it - it's just a dictionary with a few extras.

Both wonderfully entertaining and extremely helpful, this book is ideal for all people, from those of us who have just daydreamed about becoming a writer, to those of you who are already well on their way. Well written with an endearing personal touch it was perfect for me, still being at university a book on how to become a writer could easily have terrified me out of the profession forever! This book, however, inspired several of my friends and I to give writing a go. Each chapter is full of useful information sandwiched between Jane's own unpretentious and amusing life experiences as a writer; I would highly recommend it to all!

Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words may have been useful twenty-five years ago, when it was first published, but it has become redundant. Most entries clarify word spellings and meanings, which a normal dictionary does just as well (with the advantage that it lists all words, not an arbitrary selection). A Google or Yahoo search will instantly clarify the rest, such as corporate names. Grammatical or stylistic advice is rarely given, and adds little to Strunk & White's better-organised and clearer The Elements of Style. And because of the dictionary format, that advice is buried in distant entries and hard to find. I was one of those people who said for years that they wanted to write, but never quite got round to it. In January of this year, I decided to stop procrastinating and DO something about it. I bought lots and lots of books on writing, and I have to say that of the seven or eight I bought, ''Your Writing Coach'' is by far the best (with Stephen King's ''On Writing'' coming a close second.)

First of all, it's immensely readable. Like one of the other reviewers of this book, I read it from cover to cover, rather than just dipping into it, though now I am writing regularly, I refer to sections of it again and again.

As a native German and long-time anglophile I had been looking for something like this for ages. The author manages to convey his insights without any hint of intellectual stiffness or arrogance. At the same time one gets the impression he knows what he is talking about. But he is not dogmatic, either. He will freely acknowledge when his view differs from, say, common usage at publishing houses.
At the end of each chapter, there is a summary of the most important/basic rules for quick reference.
The "Penguin Guide to Punctuation" is highly informative as well as fun to read. Language scholarship at its best put to practical use. Highly recommended.
