. Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Rob Bell
July 01, 2006
I bought this book without realising what a cult Christian book it had been, based on an Amazon recommendation. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. Somehow Rob Bell manages to write some very profound ideas in a light easy to read format. What he says makes incredible sense, but he challenges us all to question both what he writes and what is taught to us as 'God's word'. The basis for this is not that he doubts the Bible, but that firstly since we always read a translation there is a degree of human interpretation, and secondly anybody teaching from the Bible brings their own personal interpretation, and so can never say that they are teaching God's word.
For those frustrated by the black and white simplicity of today's conservative ... Read More:

. Christian Theology: An Introduction
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Alister E. McGrath
October 13, 2006
a book entitled "Christian Theology" has a moral duty to cover not only Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, but also the Orthodox - both Eastern and Oriental. While this book gives a good introduction to the first two, there is almost complete lack of coverage of the third, which is most unwarranted and unfortunate, considering the spiritual wealth and contributions of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox theologians to Christianity. This book would be of very limited use to anyone interested in Christianity as it is understood and practiced by the Orthodox. Perhaps it should have been entitled "Western Christian Theology".

. The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Shane Claiborne
February 01, 2006
Shane Claiborne has found a different Jesus in the gospels than the mainstream church. He's found a Jesus who is homeless, a friend of the poor, who rails against authority and undermines the empire, who tells a rich man to sell everything he owns and give the money away. This is Claiborne's model, and he has done his best to find it, live it and prove such a life is possible.
The book follows his journey, from the disillusionment with the church of his youth, and the ambitious and wealthy `megachurches' where he trained. He talks about how he came to bond with the poor in Philadelphia, and then travelled to Calcutta to see if Mother Theresa offered a better demonstration of Christ than the ones around him. He visits Iraq in the middle of the war, testing Jesus' ... Read More:

. Surprised by Hope
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Tom Wright
December 21, 2007
In many ways this book acts as a popular level summary of Wright's recent thinking, and that is both its strength and ultimately also its weakness. The book's big idea is that Jesus' bodily resurrection is not a one off event but rather the forerunner of the general resurrection, and that this is the key which makes sense of a great deal of new testament thinking, in the gospels and the letters and in Revelation. He contends that the loss of belief in the bodily resurrection being replaced by an idea of a non-corporeal heaven has resulted not only in a loss of appropriate hope for christians but also has wider consequences for theology and for how christians live their lives. These are important ideas, clearly expressed and forcefully argued. The book's weaknesses stem from Wright's ... Read More:

. Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Marita Sturken, Lisa Cartwright
December 21, 2000
This book is a splendid introduction to theories about visual culture. It opens up the sociological / psychodynamic / anthropological theories that exist about the visual media to laymen. Another good thing is that they do not focus on high culture visual media, but also on film, television, advertising, etc. This is what makes the book valuable to people who are specialized in neighbouring fields and who wish to know more about visual media (for instance, marketeers, perception psychologists, therapists, people studying politics, etc.). On every topic the background literature is made accessible by good references and a short introduction to these references. This is really helpful! For instance, i always wanted to know more about Barthes theorizing about myths, and how that applies to advertising, ... Read More:

. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth
City Travel Guides > Books > Christianity
by: Gordon D. Fee, Douglas Stuart
November 01, 2003
This is certainly a good introduction to reading and studying the Bible. It is not the sort of book you would read from cover to cover in one go; but rather a book that you would delve into as and when you need to some guidance on a particular genre of literature.
When this book was originally publish it was quite dry, but the latest edition has been made more readable.
The recommended commentary list in the back of the book is not the best. For better help on choosing commentaries see my other reviews.
In the original book there was a definite bias towards the NIV as the best translation. This has been replaced by the TNIV as the best translation for Bible study. I have no problem about authors having a preference for a particular translation. I just wish they ... Read More:
