A brilliant book mixing adventure travel with history, geography and anthropology. The author describes his brutal journey across the enormous expanse of land that is the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tracking Stanley's exploratory expedition, the book is shocking and horrifying in what it reveals about this destitute country. It is a great read that's filled with humour and compassion for the Congolese people. As someone about to travel to the DRC, this was an insightful introduction to an amazing country - all of its wonders and dangers. Now that I have safely returned from the Congo I have recommended this to all my family and friends.

Well some time ago I read and thoroughly enjoyed "Lois On The Loose" and have had
"Red Tape & White Knuckles" pre ordered for some time.
Mr Amazon honoured his Promise and as It dropped through my door on the 4th of June
I thought at least that is one really good read to take with me next week on holiday.
..
BUT.. I made the mistake of reading the prologue ..... Then finished the book on Thursday night.!!
I must say I really REALLY enjoyed it, Even More Than "Lois On The Loose"
I take my hat.. and coat and shoes off to This young lady, She is certainly one Mad, Guttsy and Brave lass to tackle such a journey.

We've just come back from honeymoon and used this book when we visited Cairo and particularly the incredible museum... the descriptions are spot on and the book guides you thru' room by room. Our tour guide was saying practically the same things as the book, so its all you need!

Dress codes for women in Cairo aren't as strict as the book makes it out to be, there were loads of girls with string tops and shorts, so long skirts and long sleeved shirts aren't necessarily a must!! Other than that, pretty accurate about local customs and traditions.

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I find Annie Hawes impressive in the extreme in that she really knows her subject and her reader! I loved my travels with her but sadly missed the de Giglio family and all her Italian friends. I learned an awful lot about women of Islam and how they cope with the extremes of this religion. Annie presents a book which is humourous and yet holds the dignity of the way of life and customs of the land she travels in.

This was never intended to be a regular Bill Bryson book. He was invited to take a short trip to Africa, on a timetable set by his charitable guests, and to produce an equally short volume to raise funds for the charity. This he did, taking no royalties for himself. To complain about the length or to compare it to his other travelogues completely misses the point. Yes it's short, but bear in mind that for a hardcover it's pretty cheap.

As it happens, the standard of writing is as high as ever - laugh-out-loud anecdotes mixed with thought-provoking and fascinating insights into the lives of the people helped by the charity. My girlfriend and I spent 2 weeks in South Africa and hired a car, travelling over 1000 KM on our journey. It was absolutely amazing. This book was our bible in planning our days. Please do not be put off by the "rough guide" tag, this is misleading as this guide would be invaluable to all travelers, it is certainly not just a backpackers book. Very informative, bang up to date, it gives you everything from things to do/places of interest/local history to costs and directions as well as the usual accommodation/restaurants. It was like having our own tour guide. Locals and guesthouse owners on our journey would tell us that you must do this or that, but most things we already knew about from the rough guide. One of those books you can't put down. Each chapter, of about 5-15 pages is a little story in itself - funny, sad, all moving in some way. I found myself trying to limit the amount I read I enjoyed it so much! A wonderful, simple, uncomplicated and fun book.

Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven't done this i've felt I've gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.

This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.
