For me the book started well with interesting history about the Queen of Sheba time, Solomon's descendants and the Italian period when Asmara became the Art Deco capital. But then the book seems to be a constant round of war description, torture details and endless description of the bleak, arid countryside. Why the Delia Smith type recipe for female genital mutilation ? Then out of the blue we are subjected to the tale of his buying a goat, letting it play happily in his yard, then minute details of his cutting its throat to kill it, with the goat bleating and staring at him. He then cuts through its spinal cord cord to stop its legs thrashing about. Maybe this is supposed to be some kind of artistic metaphor for Eritrea' troubles..I just find ... Read More:

When I got this guidebook I was impressed. The background information was excellent and the useful information seemed to be up to Lonely Planet's usual high standard. Having just got back from Ethiopia I must say that, in our experience, I can't agree with the latter comment. Part of this is due to changing circumstances. The country seems to be changing quickly, prices have gone up sharply, new hotels seem to fade quickly and restaurants have gone. But some of the information is just wrong - the maps seem to be particularly bad and several times we found things in the wrong place. This is not to say the guidebook was useless - I still think its worth 3 stars - we may just have been unlucky with the area we were in (northern circuit) ... Read More:
