City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Bill Bryson African Diary
.Bill Bryson African Diary
City Travel Guides > Books > Kenya
by: Bill Bryson

December 02, 2002
The phrase short and sweet popped into my mind about this 49 page little book about Bill Bryson's 8 days in Kenya. It is actually a bitter sweet account about the work of the charity organization CARE one of the worlds leading international organizations fighting against poverty. They believe that by working to find the source of a communities problems and solving it they can help make the world a safer and more stable place for us all.
Unfortunately the book is a very superficial glance into the problems that are facing Kenya poverty, war, disease and corruption. However it did its job reminding me that we should be grateful for the small things in life and appreciate the fact that there are millions of people in Africa lacking even the ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The White Masai

For me this was a book that got better as it went along. I was fascinated by the descriptions of tribal life, and found I had to admire Corinne for her determination and sheer guts. At the beginning the obsessive way the she referred to her husband ('my Masai', 'my darling', etc) really put me off - it was like some rather unsettling fictional unreliable narrator - but by about half-way through I found I couldn't put the book down.

It's not great literature, and I do feel that - particularly at the beginning - the style and structure could have been greatly improved. However, it was a fascinating tale, full of interesting detail and observation. At page 50 I was ready to give up , but because I had to read it for my reading group I persevered, ... Read More:

This book is an excellent field guide and reference book which is small enough to take in your camera bag on your game drives. It has very clear and concise descriptions of the relevant animals and has a huge section on birds. The photos are of good quality.

The beginning of the book has a brief description of photography and the equipment you will need to take with you. It then attempts to explain some basic photography skills. This was not comprehensive enough to be of much use other than for the complete novice and I feel there are better books for this.

An excellent field reference and I would recommend it for your trip.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Reunion in Barsaloi

Having read, and loved the White Masai, in just a couple of days, I was looking greatly forward to this follow up book. Having rushed out to buy it as soon as it was published, I read in as soon as I could. However, I was most dissapointed. My thoughts echo the review previous to mine. I felt that the information in this book was minimal and lacked detail or depth. It seems like a half hearted attempt of a book with no interest built up at all. Every chapter is short, lasting only a few pages, which to be honest were uninteresting and in places down right boring. Compared to the first book which was full of detail, depth, emotion and character, this book has nothing. I did finish the book to see it through, but would not think of ever picking it up again.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : I Dreamed of Africa

I struggle to understand those who could not put this book down - I finished it but only through gritted teeth (if I start a book, I finish it - this has been the only book I have ever read where I came close to not reading it through to the end). The writing style is pretentious in the extreme, at times simply laughable. The story is very much told from the European/colonial perspective - and the tone is very "poor me". I would normally feel sypathetic to someone who had lost both husband and son early, but in this case I am sorry to say that I simply didn't care. The African population endures such tragedies on a daily basis and has done so for decades. Frankly, I don't think this woman looks beyond the end of her privileged nose. You will learn very little about the real Africa or ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
.The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Kenya
by: Elspeth Huxley

2000-02
This small book of 285 pages takes us back to the start of Kenya, where kikuyu were yet unaffected by the europeans. Elspeth parents buy a land from Nairobi and set up their home there. They gradually shape the farm. Men and women kikuyu and some masai come to work for them. The have cattle and plant coffee. More europeans come and settle and even Thika prospers.
As a child elspeth, sees the culture of the natives. Then comes the 1 st world war. Farms close and life of the settlers is disrupted.
Excellent book, very readable and so enjoy the sequel called " The Mottled Lizard ". Flame trees of thika is also available as 2 disc DVD. Some say it is slow, but I found it just right, for the story and the times.
There are no maps or photos.
Read and ENJOY.

This is pretty much everything a guide book should be; plenty of detail on the mainstream stuff (where to stay and eat in Nairobi, how to organise a safari in the Maasai Mara), but plenty also on the areas off the beaten track. Best of all, the book is unfailingly relevant, avoiding the usual pages of filler on the blindingly obvious. The wealth of background information and the dry, witty style are welcome bonuses. The best recomendation I can give this book is that it quite simply made our holiday much more enjoyable than it would have been.
