Stedman's trekking guide to Kilimanjaro really is a gem of a guide. It provides just about all the information you might need to help you conquer Africa's great white peak. A mine of practical information that will help take you from planning your trip to the summit and which you will probably find you take with you on your way up the mountain.Certainly when I turned Kilimanjaro into Kili half the party I was with had a copy of this book with them!

Henry Stedman covers his subject very methodically taking you from the early planning of which tour companies to use or if you arrange your trek on arrival which trekking agencies to use. This paperback with 353 pages has a large colour map on pages 4-5. The first few pages deals with getting started. Then the book goes on to the history,culture, environment, safaris and the Tanzanian wildlife. There is a chapter on food and drink.
The book then moves on to different areas of Tanzania. You need to decide where you are going and then concentrate on that chapter. Once decided, log on to internet and check the lodges, roads and maps. The internet gives you lodges and camps in detail with photos.
The last chapters in the book deal with, transport, health, language and do's and don'ts. These are a must read. There are beautiful colour photos, maps and street maps through out the book.

This book is an excellent field guide and reference book which is small enough to take in your camera bag on your game drives. It has very clear and concise descriptions of the relevant animals and has a huge section on birds. The photos are of good quality.

The beginning of the book has a brief description of photography and the equipment you will need to take with you. It then attempts to explain some basic photography skills. This was not comprehensive enough to be of much use other than for the complete novice and I feel there are better books for this.

An excellent field reference and I would recommend it for your trip.

used this book on my trip to Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar recently. the information is now surprisingly somewhat out of date. not the books fault. apparently Tanzania has changed a lot since the last edition of this book. for example. all prices have gone up by at least 30%, very often more and are still rising. Some budget listed hotels/restaurants are now really expensive. So be prepared to spend that bit more. one of the reasons for the price hike is due to current world oil prices, the country depends a lot on oil, for everything. some local people say that prices have gone up 100% over the last 2 years.

We bought this guide before our honeymoon to Zanzibar and found it really helpful in choosing the places we wanted to stay as the reviews were so detailed. It was not the only guide we bought, but having been out and used it, it is by far the most accurate and helpful. There are lots of interesting anecdotes as well as advice on what to do, where to eat and all that. We would highly recommend this book for being down-to-earth, readable and by far the most comprehensive. Have a good trip!

This is pretty much everything a guide book should be; plenty of detail on the mainstream stuff (where to stay and eat in Nairobi, how to organise a safari in the Maasai Mara), but plenty also on the areas off the beaten track. Best of all, the book is unfailingly relevant, avoiding the usual pages of filler on the blindingly obvious. The wealth of background information and the dry, witty style are welcome bonuses. The best recomendation I can give this book is that it quite simply made our holiday much more enjoyable than it would have been.

Over the years there have been many "coffee-table" books on Tanzania and East Africa. This work rates with the best of them. The photographs manage to cover the huge panorama of life in Tanzania, in both the human and animal domains. The accompanying text is accurate and amusing, demonstrating Mercer's in depth knowledge of the people and the wildlife. Well worth the money!!
