Chris Mears' account of what it was like to be a white economic immigrant to what was then called Rhodesia in the 1950s, is far removed from the usual colonial clichés of servants and sundowners round the pool - not least because she is a vegetarian in a country that likes a good braai. She takes us from her arrival in an abandoned RAF camp, starting as a government clerk, through marriage to tobacco farmer Martin and the hard graft of bringing up a family whilst living in a remote part of Southern Rhodesia. Their life is tough, bush fires common and money scarce but they are enchanted by life on their farm, particularly its wildlife. The South Luangwa valley in Zambia is renowned as "the real Africa". It is home to some of the best game in the continent and is a largely undeveloped savanna; which is prone to large scale flooding in the wet season. This book wonderfully captures its beauty. It shows the real Lunangwa throughout the year. It's a beautiful coffee table book in its own right. It'd make a great momento for anyone who has visited the area and for anyone thinking of going on an Africa safari it will be inspiring.

Naipaul is immensely skillful in his interweaving of his own feelings and impression with those of the people he meets on his African travels. There are times when the narrative is allowed to linger on subjects which do not seem particularly relevant to the Africa he is exploring, but generally the book is a fine overview of the continent, its legacies, and the problems it faced at the time Naipaul was writing. Naipaul shows a special talent for grasping the dilemmas faced by both African nations and African peoples.
