A beautifully written account of the author's experiences with the wildlife and the people involved in the wild places of Zimbabwe; witty and very entertaining, well observed and passionate, understated and fair. If you know anything of southern Africa it will strike a cord and with today's awareness of conservation everyone will pick up the message of the fragility of these truely wild places.

Chris Mears' account of what it was like to be a white economic immigrant to what was then called Rhodesia in the 1950s, is far removed from the usual colonial clichés of servants and sundowners round the pool - not least because she is a vegetarian in a country that likes a good braai. She takes us from her arrival in an abandoned RAF camp, starting as a government clerk, through marriage to tobacco farmer Martin and the hard graft of bringing up a family whilst living in a remote part of Southern Rhodesia. Their life is tough, bush fires common and money scarce but they are enchanted by life on their farm, particularly its wildlife. I read this book whilst on leave for 2 weeks and have nothing but praise for it. The writing is liquid and the characters are defined and developed so brilliantly, it's a real pleasure to read. It is a fairly long book, but it's one worth persevering with.

I shed a tear or two towards the end, which surprised me as much as it did the author in the part of the book I was reading!

To provide you with a synopsis is tough as the book combines so many genres, being as it is part biography, part travel book, part history, part page turner, part autobiography etc etc.
