City Travel Guides Discounted Books : In Xanadu: A Quest (Flamingo)
.In Xanadu: A Quest (Flamingo)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mongolia
by: William Dalrymple

September 27, 1990
In the mid 1980s, William Dalrymple (then in his early 20s) made a journey retracing the steps of Marco Polo's famous journey during the 1200s, from the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to the site of Shangdu (or Xanadu, as is better known in literature), the summer palace of Kublai Khan, in Outer Mongolia, China. In reality, though, since Soviet Central Asia was then barred to western travel, he deviated in part from Marco Polo's route, going through the Baluchi desert, in southern Iran and Pakistan, and then up the Indus river, and through the then newly opened Karakoram highway to western China, instead of traveling to China through Samarkand and other cities in Central Asia. The book itself is a mixed bag, there is some interesting ... Read More:

I have been living and working in mongolia for several years and know first hand the quirks of the countryside. Unlike other travel journals of mongolia (of which there are many) I found the author both very well informed about the real life of the people here, accurate and most importantly-fair. While the book grips you and carries you along as any good book should, he has not over-romanticied things in his favour. Often people are too prone to add their western ideas of living or comfort to this country and in turn do it an injustice. Surprisingly infact I found myself re-discovering things about this country through his fresh eyes, while also nodding in agreement to other things. As well as a journal of his experience, he weaves history lessons ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Mongolian (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)

March 01, 2008
I recently took a trip across the Trans-Mongolian railway and ordered three Lonely Planet phrasebooks. Russian, Mongolian and Chinese. Of the three, only one did not get used. That was this one.

The Mongolian phrasebook has clearly not been updated in quite a while compared to the others. This is perhaps understandable due to the relative amount of travellers that visit each country. It does mean it's not as comprehensive or well laid out as other Lonely Planet phrasebooks, however, and there are a few too many intruding unnecessary illustrations in my opinion.

Mongolian is also extremely hard to pronounce and while the book does spell out each word phonetically, the pronunciation seems to be off and you're very unlikely to be understood ... Read More:

I must confess that I have not (yet) visited Mongolia but after reading Jane Blundens Guide I feel as if I have already been there. Just One of the many reasons why this Guide can be considered exceptional is the fact that Jane Blunden manages to transfer her fascination for All Things Mongolian to the reader. It is something of a misnomer to simply call this work a Travel Guide --it is a great read, one that you can dip in & out of and each time you can be certain that you will learn something new about this wonderful Country. This Guide would make an absolutely perfect Christmas Gift. Eamonn Sreenan , Wexford, Ireland.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Hearing Birds Fly: A Year in a Mongolian Village
.Hearing Birds Fly: A Year in a Mongolian Village
City Travel Guides > Books > Mongolia
by: Louisa Waugh

January 23, 2003
What a great title! I am very much enjoying this book, it's a vivid and evocative tale of Louisa's nine months in a Mongolian village. Wonderful and personable blend of observation and self-analysis and a singing writing style which brings the village alive. A well-deserved winner of the Ondaatje prize! Maybe Louisa might like to read some more anthropology, Songs from the River's Edge, Katy Gardner's story of her time in Bangladesh and other personal accounts of fieldwork? The only thing is I would have like more compassion to our fellow travellers on earth - the animals. Travelling recently in Lapland I was shocked at the way the Sami treated the reindeer - just because people are indigeneous does not give them the right to be cruel, and things like keeping ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Edge of Blue Heaven: Journey Through Mongolia
.Edge of Blue Heaven: Journey Through Mongolia

by: Benedict Allen

October 15, 1998
I've been visiting Mongolia for the last three years, primarily to work on several archaeological sites, but also just to explore that wondrous country. The author of Edge of Blue Heaven starts his journey in the capital city, U.B. and then heads to the far north to embark on his trek by horse and camel across the country. I've traveled some of the same ground and the author is 100% on the mark with his descriptions of the people, culture and the incredible beauty of the region. There were times when I burst out laughing, nudging my wife and pointing out a passage, saying "see, the same darn thing happened to him!" The only disagreement I have, "aureg" fermented horse milk, is actually quite good, once you've acquired the taste for it (and your ... Read More:

tim severins account of his travels through mongolia provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the modern, or not so modern inhabitants of this country. intertwined with his travelogue tim weaves an account of the history of their great leader, ghengis khan, bringing these two periods of time together. as usual for this author it is a well written and researced book with his trademark dry humour. my only grumble is that the book could have continued on further than it does to provide a solid ending to the trip.
