This book is an essential for any visitor to North Korea whether they be a tourist or on a business trip.The layout is very similar tothe 2003 edition with some sections being virtually unchanged.After dealing with the capital 9 areas of the country are given adetailed description-the ones on the border areas are excellent.Wher this book falls down are a)the offwhite colour of the paper withthe small type which makes it difficult to read and b)the small and minimal pictures.North Korea is a very picturesque which deserves better.

Just another dreary and mediocre pictorial book written and photographed by so called experts.The forward shows no understanding of Korean culture or customs and gives the impression that if North Koreans waved the American flag,played b aseball and drank Coca Cola everything would be accebtable.His description of passengers on te underground is fatuous as he has never looked at faces on the New York subway. The picture section covers three aspects a)Pyongyang b)various villages and fre trade zones and c)the demilatarised zone. Although some of the pictures are average many are flat insipid and lacking sparkle or imagination.Many of the architectural ond geographical gems have been ignored. The cult-of-personality-land seems to be getting an invigorating showing these days. This is the fourth book of photos to be released in the last two years and though they might have North Korea in the title it is mostly photos of Pyongyang that always predominate. The Ministry of Truth follows this pattern with just under a hundred photos and some posters.

It is unfortunate that what is on show is of such poor quality. So many are soft focus, grey, badly composed and lacking in any creativity to really show anything of this odd country. I wonder if this is because the minders were looking elsewhere when most of these shots were taken? The authors also, annoyingly, take an easy out by not writing any captions but supply the dotty ... Photo books about North Korea are few and far between and then two come along together (I wonder if publishers just hate that?). The other title is 'Inside North Korea' with photos by Mark Harris. In fact they cover different aspects of the same country.

Philippe Chancel's book essentially covers the capitol Pyongyang but Harris visits several places in the country. Pyongyang is stuffed with bureaucrats, civil servants and the military plus their families so it can hardly be considered truly representative of the country. Chancel's beautiful photos reflect this. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book even though I found some of the scenes Harrold describes about life in North Korea quite depressing - it's just unimaginable that in this day and age people are forced to live like this. The other aspect of this book that shocked me in a way is the privileged existence Harrold leads in North Korea. One does get the impression that every other person he meets in North Korea is part of the upper class or caters to them.
