Although I travelled just before a new edition of this book was published, I thought this book was excellent in helping me plan my holiday in advance. We knew we wanted to go to Thailand but weren't quite sure where - this book helped us decide based on not only things to see & do but weather condtions etc, which I found were excellent compared to many internet sites and travel brochures (which portray Thailand as one climate area, when in fact it has many different weather systems). The book was excellent and still felt 'up to date'; for example it helped us find the most fab little boutique hotel "Buddy Lodge" in Bankok which was exactly what we were looking for and never would have found otherwise. Well, I have to disagree about this book.I was given it as a Christmas present by my son before a diving trip to Curacao...Footprint books are normally so thorough. Well, here the pictures are great but it is not "light" on the Caribbean so much as totally non-existant!So give it the title 'Long Haul Diving Destinations' and see if that gets more stars...
For Africa the Tierneys recommend Kenya but diving professionals I know recommend Mozambique,the Quirimbas;Medjumbe and Matemo.

The best way to judge a book like this is to look at areas you do know.

The Lonely Planet books are very useful for all budgets, covering backpackers to those who like to splash their cash. This book covers all the Thai islands and coastal areas, as well as an extensive section on Bangkok.

It includes details of transportation between all the different areas which is really handy if you are making your own way around Thailand, and there are tips on scams to avoid etc. It also includes the usual information of accommodation, eating options, things to do etc.

I would highly recommend getting this book if you are planning to travel around Thailand as it will be an invaluable source of information.

I am English and know many Thai people. Western and Thai views of the world are very different and can lead to significant confusion in daily dealings let alone close relationships. Of all the books I have seen on Thai/Western culture conflicts - this is the best.

Very good book in what i suspect is a good series. I will definately purchase a book from this series again prior to going anywhere abroad. i have been to thailand, but purchased this book on my return. i what somewhat mortified to learn that i had unwittingly made a few faux pas's! never again!

These DK guides may not tell you where the cheapest beer in Chaing Mai can be found, or where to find the wackier entertainments (try Footprint guides, which seem to pretty much on the money for Real stuff) but they are absolutely gorgeous, and as a result do make superb souvenirs. They're deceptively informative, and generally pretty accurate, too.
