I almost set it down after 200 pages. But I decided NO... it will get better. It didnt, just rumbled on at the same old speed. Davina McCall describes Danny Wallace to be a genius- O dear, please.

Previous editions of this book have been criticised for focusing too much on mid range and expensive places to sleep and eat whilst leaving out cheaper, more budget-orientated options. This edition (14th) is aimed at restoring the balance slightly, and from what I can see it appears to be an improvement. There are a lot of guidebooks for Australia on the market so it is just a matter of finding one that is to your taste, but this one is definitely full of comprehensive information for your trip.

I must be honest and say that I started this book in tandem with another just because I didn't think I'd be terribly interested in the subject matter, much as I love Bryson. By the end of the second chapter, I wanted to book a ticket on the next flight to Perth. The flora, fauna and folks that inhabit this wondrous country intrigue me strangely.

Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I have ever encountered. I find myself reading bits aloud at the slightest hint of encouragement. I challenge anyone to read his discussion of running through a park trying to get away from some scary dogs, and ending up in an unsuspecting housewife's back garden, without laughing out loud. I recently spent some time touring around New Zealand and this guide was my constant companion(as well as my wife).For your money you get an extemely comprehensive guide to one of the most beautiful countries in the world.From the lush green farmland of the north island to the barren desolate stretches of the south island "Gods own country" has it all.

Each area is dealt with in separate chapters and each chapter begins with the "highlights" of the area,so if the highlights dont appeal keep driving! I read the book cover to cover in a couple of hours. This is mostly down to the vast majority of content being pretty basic and useless. I agree with the critical reviews already published. There's an awful lot of generalisation, little facts or detail. Says tax is higher, but not what the rates are, says wages are lower - but not how much in proportion to cost of living. Gives advice to research in advance, but mostly refers to the Govt immigration website. Advice on jobs and/or careers is poor. So in terms of decision making, it doesn't help one way or another. It's ok for a second-hand book to read, but if you're looking for a serious book to give you the hard facts of living and working in Australia, this isn't the one!

I browed the 2003 edition of this book from my local library and thought that is was good. I liked the layout (still do) thought that it had a lot of useful information mixed in with pictures. So when a 2008 edition came out I though great I will have the most up to date information with some added pictures. Or so I thought when I got the book I found that it is nearly identical to the 2003 one. There is only one extra page of information in the history. Flicking though the remainder of the pages I found that they are all the same, same pictures, some of the maps have been re coloured, and most of the text is identical too. Lonely Planet is in general known for not updating their books much and the kiwi version is tragic.
I got it when it was just 'updated' and none of the prices, the hostels and the attractions were updated. Half the placed had closed, had doubled in price or were in fact a completely different attraction, than what it says.
Going to NZ you don't need a travelguide. Buy a car (don't pay more than NZ$2500 for a old van) and just go. There are not many roads, you can't get lost.
Attractions are easy to review at local i-sites and they provide correct information.
