. Throwim Way Leg: An Adventure
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Tim Flannery
May 03, 2007
If Tim Flannery isn't the luckiest biologist in the world, then perhaps he's the hardest working. He possesses a spirit of adventure that may exceed both. His twenty years of exploring the mysteries of New Guinea are superbly outlined and related in this engaging account. Although a mammalogist by profession, his interests range far beyond any academic discipline. We follow his efforts to meet and gain acceptance by the remote peoples of the New Guinea highlands. They are a diverse lot, and every new contact is fraught with uncertainty. He introduces us to the teasing pleasures of New Guinea pidgin, a language adopted by indigineous peoples to cross the nearly 1 000 languages that exist on the island. Throwim' Away Leg, New Guinean ... Read More:

. Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (Lonely Planet Multi Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Rowan McKinnon, Dean Starnes, Jean-Bernard Carillet
May 01, 2008
Once upon a time, Lonely Planet had a good guide to Papua New Guinea (371 pages), and an excellent one to the Solomon Islands (279 pages). For better or worse these fascinating countries don't exactly attract hordes of holidaymakers, so after leaving those books unupdated for many years, the publisher has now decided to dump them together in this new edition (272 pages).
The result is basically a new, much slimmer guide to Papua New Guinea, with fewer than 30 pages on the Solomons (where it only actually covers half the country even nominally).
Not only has much of the detail been thrown out, the quality of information has also gone downhill sharply! :-(
The authors have very obviously never visited even major tourist destinations ... Read More:

. Papua New Guinea (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Tony Wheeler, Adrian Lipscomb, Rowan McKinnon, Jon Murray
February 28, 1998
And the only one worth carrying for independent, budget travellers, I might add.
While this book was never perfect, and I would only have rated it 4 stars even when it was brand new (because its coverage of certain areas is really sketchy, and it curiously ignores some long-established budget places to stay), the new "PNG & Solomon Islands" guide that was published in 2005 to replace it is so much worse that it makes this guide seem 5*+ in comparision.
While the new guide is almost totally written for those going to PNG to stay in ultra-expensive resorts and see the country on guided tours, this 1998 edition still has the usual, more backpacker-oriented style many readers expect from LP guides. It will tell you about budget places to ... Read More:

. Child of the Jungle
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Sabine Kuegler
December 06, 2007
This book is a fascinating synosis of life for a young white girl growing up in the jungles of Indonesia. As sabine enters teeenage years she begins an internal struggle, which lasts many years, as to where she belongs-the jungle with all its freedoms or the civilised world with all its normality.
The book is well written and gives a fascinating insight into the life of adventure for a young girl but ends with her return to Europe and the new adventures she must tackle.

. Papua New Guinea: A Travel Survival Kit
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Tony Wheeler
1988-12
Most travel books are often victim to becoming more like holiday brochures, but "The lost tribe" has escaped this end. Unlike other reports, this book of adventure in the jungles of Papua New Guinea has sufficient pace and direction to hold the reader. With unexpected twists of fate combining with the expected encounters of the local people, Edward Marriott has succeeded in producing an entertaining and educating work. However, it was all too easy to imagine being there and although the discussions between the author and other field experts gave an account of the history of the Liawep, there was little else to distinguish this book from others of its kind.

. The People of Lake Kutubu and Kikori: Changing Meanings of Daily Life
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Mark Busse, Susan Turner, Nick Araho
August 31, 1995
Isabella Tree's travelogue of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea is a sympathetic and well researched account, providing both a frank and honest account of her journey, also much of the historical context necessary to fully interpret present day life in The Highlands. Her description of successive visits two years apart also illustrates the great changes taking place in this, one of the least explored and most recently reached by Western influence. Having visited most of the sites she described, some time between her two trips, the book rang particularly true and I was touched and somewhat saddened to hear of for example, the decay of Kutubu Lodge. If you have ever visited PNG then buy this book, not only for a delightful nostalgia session but also for a well ... Read More:
