The first issue here is over the name of the book, It is NOT `Bitter Lemons of Cyprus'; it was published as `Bitter Lemons', and that title has far more contextual meaning. Lemons are bitter sweet, and that defines Durrell's relationship with Cyprus, his village, the villagers and indeed the UK, which he generally referred to as Pudding Island. I will declare an interest: I adore Cyprus; this book was a main reason for me to visit, and subsequently, some 20 years ago we bought an arty house in a beautiful village. We have spent eight years living amongst some of the most generous, open and warm-hearted people on earth. This rings out from Durrell's book too. Before I bought this book there were loads of other customer reviews (don't know why there are none today) with varied opinions - quite a few negative ones, so I ended up buying the Eyewitness Travel guide and the AA spiral guide instead. Whilst the Eyewitness book is lovely to look at having so many colour photos and th AA book is a handy size, I have to say that I ended up buying the Lonely Planet guide as well as it has far more detailed information about the island eg history, costs, restaurants, just everything really. It is written by someone who has tried and tested all that the island has to offer and its detailed reviews entice you to go and try for yourself. It really is a far more superior guide, though admittedly not so attractive ... Read More:

A good guide, especially if you are the type that like reading a bit. The rough guides are more text than for example the lonely planet ones.

I like reading a bit and like the detail and the history section, so this was good for me.

The big drawback is the negative point of view of the author. He seems to find all things that are wrong with Cyprus. If you buy this guide, which is very good in many ways, don't let this overwhelm you. The problem with focusing on the negative is that you miss out on the small pearls that are good and beutiful in the middle of the less-than-great aspects of Cyprus. There's not a great deal of choice which is why it is fortunate this is an excellent book, a must before for those going to North Cyprus. Covers Monasteries and classical ruins, wildlife and Flora. The major cities of Girne (Kyrenia), Lefkosa (Nicosia) and Famagusta. The ordinary tourist stuff, money exchange, transport and where to eat and visit as well as Language etc.

Just returned from Cyprus; wonderful place, great hospitality and terrific April weather. The holiday was completely made by our ability to walk using the Landscapes walking guide. This blue book has always had good press, but this is the first time I've used it in Cyprus. We had the latest update, since there is a new edition about to hit the shops, and the update gave us the latest jizz on all the places to visit. Troodos walks are sensational, but the walks in the area north of Paphos are fantastic. We stayed at Kathikas, and the update gave us info on new walks about to appear in the new edition in this area. Wonderful - every farmer we saw wanted to give us fruit from his groves. This isn't bad for those going to the south of the island but it does have a little rant on how the the United Nations 'deplores' the Turkish Military etc so may not be so suitable for those visiting the North. It does have a giant map of the entire island and also 12 Tours around Cyprus, which unfortunately are all in the South. It's a shame you can't just buy a non-biased publication giving you the information you want.
