A travelogue with a difference, or at least a fridge.

Or 'My self absorbed travels around various pubs in Ireland whilst trying to get my leg over'.

Hawks shows virtually no interest in the country he is visiting (he leaves the 'deeply spiritual' place he feels 'honoured' to be visiting to go to the pub (surprise) to watch a football match. (The photo's included in the book are of the fridge, cars and pubs, there is 1 - yes one, photo of some scenery)

His attitude is 'me, me, me' all the the way throuh, which to be honest might not be so bad if Hawks were a pleasant companion but unfortuantley he comes accross as an uninformed, patronising, buffoon. His 'jokes' are painfull (especially towards the end ... Read More:

We found the LP guide to Dublin to be as accurate and informative as all the others we've used.

Information is presented in a very easy to follow format. Recommendations are to be relied upon. We tried a Lebanese restaurant in the book and had a truly delicious meal. We booked a lodge on LP recommendation and it was exactly as described in the book. We did a walking tour in the book and it was brilliant.

I don't think I could actually do a sightseeing holiday now without LP as a companion. I'd feel lost without one.

Camping is a somewhat re-visited activity and, over the years, I'm used to 'AA' books, which are, generally, reliable and offer a list of places to troll through, so I grabbed the book off the shelf without really looking at it! Fool that I am.


Now, this is a book, right?... and you are meant to be able to read it easily, right?... OK, yes I wear 'readers' but the print is still somewhat small and the font could have been better, but my gripe is with the symbols for what each site offers...they are truly small and difficult to distinguish, especially in low light. The symbols are the key and worth a thousand words, so should be crystal! AND...what about dogs?...OK it has a symbol for 'dog exercise area', so one assumes dogs ... Read More:

I RECKON I know a fair amount about Ireland but even I found some little gems in this very entertaining book.
Dracula may have been an Irishman and Glenveagh castle was the site of the world's largest outdoor swimming pool (they heated the lough with steam pipes) ... apparently.
As well as being choc-a-bloc with quirky facts, historical and architectural information, the book's organisation - broken down by county - makes it easy to find stuff relevant to where you live or travel.
It's this structure which gives 'I Never Knew...' the edge over the equally entertaining and probably more odd 'The Irish Companion'(ed) Brendan Nolan. The latter is a great read but you just have to digest it in the order it is served.

Well firstly, lets not give a product an average review for something it patently doesn't pretend to be. The Baker atlas has always purported to show the 'current' rail network, and has never depicted closed routes or rail formations abandoned to nature (the book makes this clear in it's introduction). As such, the review by 'Essex Boy' which bemoans such omissions is rather akin to suggesting you shouldn't buy a spanner if it's a pair of tweezers you are after, and marking the product down because you've given yourself a black eye whilst attempting to wrench out your eyebrows!
Of course, like Essex Boy, I don't rate the atlas THAT highly either, but that's because it's not actually particularly good at what it claims to be on the tin. ... Read More:

This is a humorous - at times hilarious/laugh-out-loud funny/need to quote to the nearest person - travel book by an English man exploring his family ties to Ireland. Pete McCarthy travels across Ireland in the hopes of answering the question: "do I belong here?" Along the way, he paints the picture of a country that has changed due to a rapid economic boom - a place where the old and the new sit side-by-side in what seems to be a very tenuous balance.

Pete believes that one should always stop and have a drink in a pub that bears one's name. I bought this book about 2 weeks ago and have already spent a few happy hours daydreaming.
My husband and I are approaching our first wedding anniversary and I bought the book because I wanted to make sure we choose the right hotel for a lovely romantic weekend away. Looking at the pictures and the information I don't think we'll be dissappointed.
It's true that many of the hotels featured are on the expensive side but there are some more reasonable entries. There is even a section at the front of the book indicating which hotels are in which price bracket. Fantastic!
