Why? because there is such an embarrasment of riches to see, places to go and his guided walks organise and make sense of it all. Its like having your personal guide at hand whispering in your ear, pointing out the little details that you might otherwise miss.

Personally i would pack an illustrated guide like the Everyman too for colour and more traditional guidebook information.

The contemporary decriptions of the gardens are accurate and quite detailed in those favourite few. For example Villa Lante close to Viterbo in Lazio. There are also some historical details and this book will most certainly help you in your quest for learning more about the progression of The Italian garden.
