These Michelin guides are indispensable for travel in France. The accommodation and food recommendations can be a bit off target (a restaurant or B&B can change quickly) but the village-by-village, town-by-town detail in easy A-Z format gives you information that doesn't really date, and gives insight to a world of beautiful backwaters that may otherwise be missed. A real key to France. It kicks Lonely Planet into the weeds.

Ok, not entirely suited to the Normandy Beaches tourist but still a useful book I found. The bits that concerned the WW2 sites were informative and maps easy to find/follow. This coupled with a road map and some history books really made the "Discover the history of the Landings" trip for me. Small enough to carry on my motorbike tank bag and also interesting enough to read @ night it was a good last minute buy. An added bonus was the fact that the Channel Islands are featured in this guide too, somewhere else I am planning to see for the WW2 aspect soon.

The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is more than 200-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. The coverage looks well planned for those driving around and visiting different places. I must admit I've only used the guide for a small part to the East of Marseille and the odd visit to Aix, Avignon and les Baux, but it was fine for what I was looking for. I would mention that if you plan a visit to a very specific place then it might be better to look for a guide targeted to your exact needs. Having said that I plan to use the guide when visiting Nimes and Arles.

The green Michelin guides are a classic reference, but I'm not an unconditional fan. This guide is nearly 300-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. I bought this guide not so much for the regions or famous cities, but for the occasional visit to a small place like Parma, Como or Trento. I lived in Italy for some years, and I speak Italian, and there are far better Italian guides out there when visiting Florence or Rome. So this guide is useful, but not more than that.
