. The Motorcycle Diaries
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Ernesto "Che" Guevara
July 19, 2004
This is the short, eloquent account of Che's travels around South America. He is very descriptive and evocative and this book is not only a great travelogue, but it is also a great insight into what made Che become the revolutionary he did. It looks at the exploits and relationships he experienced on the road, looking day to day for the next meal, lift or bed. A good insight into this iconic figure and a damn good read to boot.

. Peru (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Sara Benson, Paul Hellander, Rafael Wlodarski
February 01, 2007
Whenever I go traveling I always take a Lonely Planet with me, they are indispensable and Peru was no exception. While the book served me well and ensured my travels where well informed and trouble free.
But!, I feel the book is not up to lonely planets usual standard, the whole book was pitched at a too negative tone, it had me thinking I would be raped/mugged/attacked every 5 mins, to the contrary I felt entirely safe for all the time I was there. Many of the prices where incorrect despite the books recent publish date, I also found the descriptions of many of the hotels to be wrong, it seemed as if they had been randomly shuffled in editing.

. South America on a Shoestring (10th Edition/March 2007) : Big Trips on Small Budgets (Lonely Planet Shoestring Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Danny Palmerlee
March 01, 2007
Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). However, the layout is accurate and helps to orientate yourself around cities.
The information regarding major tourist attractions is ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Cuba (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Fiona McAuslan, Matthew Norman
August 30, 2007
We used this guide to travel around Cuba independently for two weeks. It's not as good as other Rough Guides we've used in the past (Kenya, Egypt).
While it isn't particularly bad, there are a few issues:
The maps of Havana are worse and smaller than in the previous (2005) edition of the guide, and there's no map of the area between Centro Habana and Vedado - you have to flick between two maps and there are no street names on the overlapping area. We ended up carrying the DK Eyewitness travel guide for Cuba just to have a half-decent map.
The writer(s) seemed to get bored of Cuba and there's a thread of cynicism and sarcasm that, while generating a smile at first, does become very tedious as it threads throughout ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Mexico (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: John Fisher, Zora O'Neill, Paul Whitfield, Daniel Jacobs
July 05, 2007
Although I give this book 4 stars, I feel I need to justify my decision for this because it may not be for everyone. I actually bought this book AFTER I travelled to Mexico, because although I decided not to buy it before I went for various reasons, I came home feeling I had missed out on loads of knowledge about where I went, so I bought the book just to fill in some gaps!
I found the book to be a really interesting read; it has loads of info about culture, religion, history and the like, all the kinds of things I thought I would find out about on the trips we took (but didn't because the Thomson tour guide didn't speak very good English) and I kicked myself that I didn't have it before we went because I would have got so much more out of our ... . Cuba (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
from: Dorling Kindersley Publishers Ltd
August 02, 2007
This truly is a thorough and comprehensive travel guide, giving readers not only a great idea of what to expect when they visit Cuba, but also a great deal of other information regarding the scenery of Cuba, it's social and political history, it's key political figures, and a wealth of information on it's art and culture.
All of which is rich and fascinating, creating a picture of an intriguing country of great warmth and openness; a country which is well worth visiting, if only for the pure white sand and the nature which is a veritable feast for poets and painters. This book will tell you pretty much everything you could possibly need to know about Cuba. Read it and read about an entirely different way of life.
