This is a fascinating book in that it raises (again) the issue of the relationship between ideology and 'truth'. This book is still a required text in many university syllabuses, despite the fact that Menchu's account is manifestly fictional. Her 'humble' illiteracy is a lie. Her father's enforced conscription is a lie. The account of the death of one brother is a lie - and the other brother described as dead is apparently alive and well. Her own contemporaries in Guatemala are mystified by her narrative. Despite these things, this book is still doing the rounds, and within the world of political correctness, particularly where the ideology of the left is being advanced, apparently truth does not need to be 'true' to be valid. This guide proved to be a very useful companion during our trip to Guatemala in August 2006, and was very strong on hotels (we found some amazing places around lake Atitlan)and eating options.The maps were great and bus and shuttle connections useful and generally accurate. Check out the photo section for a good introduction to Guatemala - a wonderful country, allowing us to pick and choose from the highlights suggested.

Tikal was very well covered, with tons of historical info. In fact that is the real strength of this guide - very complete coverage of Guatemala's Maya sites.

Lots of informative text and splendid pictures make this portable guide well worth its relatively modest price. The book deals with almost every aspect of both ancient and modern-day Maya life, as well as with practical travel information. I have been through La Ruta Maya on five different trips and am a fan of travel literature on Central America, but I still learned many new things from this book, especially about present-day Maya practices. There are a few typos, but still, it's perfect for actual or armchair travel to La Ruta Maya.

This is an astonishingly beautiful books of color photographs of Guatemalan people (and their animals) amidst their traditional woven textiles. The introduction gives a respectful and knowledgable overview. Vecchiato: "Mayan weaving is a celebration of feelings shared in common by an entire ethnic group." He provides background and a brief description of the harsh political climate of Mayan Guatemala. The pictures are full of life and joy. Market scenes; babies, children, parents, old folks; processions; plus tender and intimate moments - along with the statement that "they will never reveal themselves completely to any one of us." This is a wonderful book.

A friend lent this book to me whilst I was travelling the Maya trail. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy it once back in England.
The story follows the travels of Ronald Wright starting in Belize, then taking a circular route through the Yucatan and Chiapas areas of Mexico, and Guatamala.
Along the way, the author describes the people he meets, the local customs, and the often turbulent history. There is plenty of detail about the Mayan buildings and their complex constructions of calenders and measures of time.
A most absorbing book.
