. Nicaragua (Footprint Travel Guide Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Nicaragua
by: Richard Leonardi
July 29, 2005
Richard Leonardi’s travel guide on Nicaragua as part of the Footprint series is not only the best English language guide that I have ever read, it is also the best travel companion and resource that I have ever used punto finale. I was four years in the Merchant Navy and in my current life as a film maker and journalist for the BBC and Irish television I have travelled extensively. What this means is that I have had continual need of practical, up to date and accurate information on the countries I have visited like Japan, Mexico, the Faeroe Islands or elsewhere. Practical help in a travel book is usually the first refuge of the traveller who is stuck and the last refuge of that scoundrel author who does not check and ... Read More:

. The Jaguar Smile: Nicaraguan Journey
City Travel Guides > Books > Nicaragua
by: Salman Rushdie
March 01, 2007
Like one of the other reviewers I have never felt tempted to try reading Rushdie's work. I stumbled across this title when searching for English languauge books on Nicaragua. It looked sufficiently short in length so I took the chance.
The book is a series of cameos and linked events Rushdie experienced during a visit to Nicaragua in 1986 sponsored by the Sandinista government. He introduces us to several different characters in a very personal style from the President to a midwife on the inaccessible caribbean coast. He clearly likes the country and people and respects what the Sandinistas were trying to do, but without being unquestioning of some of the policies.
The style, with short chapters based around different ... Read More:

. Nicaragua
City Travel Guides > Books > Nicaragua
from: ITMB Publishing
May 30, 2007
If you like your writing vivid and flush with the kind of humor that severely tests internal organs, look no further. This collection of pieces written initially for Outside magazine takes the reader off the beaten track to a world of radioactive night crawlers, illegally salvaged golf balls and pigs of prey, among other delights. Randy Wayne White has a wonderful talent for observation which, meshed with a finely honed sense of the absurd, has produced some of the most original travel writing anywhere. Take a trip with him; you won't regret it.

. Wild Shore
City Travel Guides > Books > Nicaragua
by: Edward Marriott
January 12, 2001
"Jaws meets Bill Bryson" it said on the cover. How misleading. It's never funny, never dramatic, and always takes the long road to making any point. The narrator, in my opinion, is a characterless bore, more obsessed with describing the sweat on a fisherman's back than with moving the story forward. A few photos would have done a better job than the thousands of descriptive words and endless digressions. Shame, really, as the subject matter is intriguing and there are a few excellent vignettes.
