. In Patagonia (Vintage Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Chile
by: Bruce Chatwin
January 08, 1999
How many children become adults fulfilling a childhood dream by visiting remote places? Bruce Chatwin, driven by memories of his grandfather's strange artifact, takes us with him to the farthest reaches of South America. His travels in that mysterious realm result in this masterfully done account of journeys in Patagonia - southern Argentina and Chile. It's not an exaggeration to praise this work as the first to supplement Darwin's. Both sought fossils, although Chatwin's pursuit is rather more specific. Both described the land, the people and events in the most captivating and readable manner. A rare treasure in travel literature, this book is a timeless treasure. Patagonia has been a haven for many European ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Chile (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Chile
by: Melissa Graham, Andrew Benson
August 31, 2006
This is could be a very useful guide BUT we found both the accommodation infos and the maps EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE. Hostels are likely to either no longer exist or to differ strongly from the descriptions provided. If the guide says that a hostel is "not so nice", read that as a clear "stay away, this place is a dump". You can spare yourself some horrid nights that way. Just ask other people where they stayed and write it down in a notebook. We found the city maps simply abysmal. Entire blocks and streets were missing from the map of Osorno, which led to an hour long trek across town, whereas the map showed that our accommodation was just two blocks away from the Plaza da Armas. Having said that, RG is definitely better than LG, which seems to consist ... Read More:

. Between Extremes: A Journey Beyond Imagination
City Travel Guides > Books > Chile
by: Brian Keenan, John McCarthy
September 01, 2000
If this was just a travel book, it would be pretty mediocre fare. However, it isn't. The 'extremes' of the title are not merely those of Chile, but the personalities of two very different men welded together by the trauma and ordeal of their shared past. Similarly, the journey is 'beyond imagination' not because of the almost unimaginable landscape of the country, but because they spent hours in captivity, imagining the Journey (and a rather more bizarre 'Yak farm').
How can two such different human beings become so enmeshed and sensitive to the nuances of each other's thoughts and behaviour? Well, read "An Evil Cradling" and "Some Other Rainbow", and *then* read this book. Suddenly, the journey acquires hidden treasures behind the unremarkable ... Read More:

. The Linger Loco!: In Search of the Real Carnival (Argentina, Chile, Peru, Brazil)
City Travel Guides > Books > Chile
by: Simon Raven, Chris Raven
October 30, 2007
This third book by the Raven brothers is absolutely brilliant. Unlike any other travel book you are likely to read, the Linger Loco is tear-wateringly funny, candid and insightful. This book is reminiscent of the travels of Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman, yet so much more genuine; these guys have no support crew of employees sorting their visas, arranging accomodation, providing medical care or streamlining the trip. And their enthusiasm for their unsscripted, itinerary-free adventure is really refreshing, compared with the bratty outbursts of McGregor and Boorman. I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Long Way Down' genre, but wants a more down to earth, humour-filled read.

. A Chile: Travels in a Thin Country
City Travel Guides > Books > Chile
by: Sara Wheeler
December 07, 2006
This is "travel writing" in the sense that we know it these days. Author thinks of a trip. If successfully published previously, gets an advance. Makes arrangements, connections and contacts, sharpens pencils, buys dictaphone tapes and tickets and goes. The result is what was intended from the start - a book. OK, no harm in that. This is what Sara Wheeler does for a living, just like Bryson, Theroux, Palin et al. Other authors go nowhere, make it all up - that's fiction. Somewhere in between is Bruce Chatwin, who went to places and then made a lot of it up. So, for those of us who have bought these books and in fact pay for these trips, was this one worth it?
I'd say it was. Sara Wheeler writes well. She's humorous but not jokey. She's thoughtful but not ... Read More:
