This book is a rare thing.There is something of the streetwise combined the well read.It puts you in a space between the world of the conformist and the outlaw.People can only critisize the sincerity of the story but even that only adds to beautiful prose-like seedy imagery in this unreal chaotic reality.It rocks.

As well as being a compulsive, thrilling read this book deals with issues of indigenous peoples and the destruction of ancient cultures by the western civilisation. I finished it last week and am now sitting at my computer screen in London I am still thinking about the tribes of the Amazon jungle.

Forget about the "selling" title: not one line of cocaine is snorted in this intelligent, witty, sensitive book. I must admit I didn't really care about the family pretext of this trip to Colombia, but at the end I was moved by the reunion. Fascinating how Smith sinks into Colombian daily life, always sympathetic, never judgmental or naive. By the way, a much more in-depth analysis of the roots of Latin America's problems (violence, poverty, sub-development) than the outdated and shallow lectures scattered throughout "The Gringo Trail" .

I noticed no "patriotic drivel", and I found that the greatest part of the book was about the joys of motorcycle travel. Yes, when the author was captured by the ELN, he didn't mention his motorcycle but then would you be thinking of your motorcycle??? After this horrible detour, his friends come to his aid and send him another motorcycle and he continues his ride. I think most would not. I sometimes thought the author's prose was a little forced, but other than that this is a truly outstanding book.

This breathtaking book displays the manicured gardens of the privileged and the magnificent natural beauty of simple country farm houses. It also includes outstanding photographs of titan trees and lush tropical vegetation.

However, a special quality of this book is that it captures the careful planning of home and garden in Colombia. Some of the gardens in "Gardens of Colombia" are very old and offer wonderful views of mature walkways, paths and streams. My favorite pages are those that show unique Colombian courtyard gardens. In short, this Villegas editores publication is a paradise of garden landscapes and a perfect coffee table book.
