I bought this guide before I travelled around Ecuador and other parts of South America last summer. Although it was helpful, well presented and laid-out, I found the guide disppointing in two main ways:
The maps used are sometimes inaccurate in terms of where the symbols for bus stations, hotels etc have been placed, and some street names do not match those given in the guide;
The guide has been badly edited in a few places, meaning that it is difficult to understand what point the author is trying to make.
I also found that a lot of information in this edition is long out of date (if you are buying this, make sure to print of a copy of Lonely Planet's updates from their website, although I don't know how useful they are either). ... Read More:

Took this book with us on our recent trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. Really useful, packed with loads of background natural history info & great pictures, and helped us get far more out of our trip than we would have otherwise. Detailed information about all the landing sites. The book came home very battered as every passenger on the boat used it daily!

I won't go into much detail of how this book is written neither give this book moral evaluation like some people here do in their reviews. Especially the guy who gave it 1 star accusing Ms Jolie of doing little. Disgusted as that man probably wrote his wrote whilst seated at a comfy desk himself. Anyway, I personally enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. Below is a brief list of pos/neg sides of it.

- it gives you insight into the places most media have lost interest in, draws a vivid picture of places she visits in your own mind;

This book was very useful in identifying wildlife in Ecuador and it was nice to have one book with a selection of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and even a few invertebrates rather than carrying lots of different books. It is a good size to carry when travelling and the text is much more interesting than in your average field guide and a good introduction to the ecology of Ecuador. However there are so many different species in Ecuador that unsurprisingly it can sometimes be frustrating when you can't even identify an incredibly colourful bird using this book. There are about 1,600 species of birds in Ecuador and only 350 or so in this book! So if you are very serious about your birding I would recommend Birds of Columbia (until Birds of Ecuador ...
