. Iran (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Iran
by: Andrew Burke, et al
July 01, 2008
Having recently visited iran in August 2008 I found the Lonely Planet guide to be the most accurate, although my version was 2004 therefore not quite up to date eg the new airport has now opened. It provides information on just about everything you can expect to encounter on your travels through this country. The biggest truth being the Tehran traffic! This being the only issue regarding safety I had throughout my 3 week travels. The pollution makes your eyes water, and the smog hanging over the city cuts out the view of the mountains beyond. Crossing the road made a farce of the green cross code! Yes, you really do wait for others to cross and go with them!
Fashions for women are variable. Many do still wear chador, and all without exception ... Read More:

. Mirrors of the Unseen: Journeys in Iran
City Travel Guides > Books > Iran
by: Jason Elliot
July 20, 2007
This is a rather unprofessional and distorted piece of work as neither the author nor the publisher seem to have got the basic facts right about the country and its people. The map of Iran at the beginning of the book with the stretch of water in the south of the country not being shown by its proper name, Persian Gulf, is a good evidence of the ignorance and lack of professional approach in the preparation and publication of this book. As "a picture is worth thousand words" I find this critical error a shining mirror of the publisher's lack of understanding and poor judgement, making all the praises printed on the cover of the book rather hollow and misleading.

. Danziger's Travels: Beyond Forbidden Frontiers (Paladin Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > Iran
by: Nick Danziger
February 22, 1993
I picked this up in Oxfam after seeing an ad for it in the back of Wild Swans, and am really glad I did, because I think it's brilliant.
Fair enough, Nick Danziger is no Eric Newby, but he's a decent writer and I quite like his little moments of self-reflection- one has to remember he was 26/27 at the time of writing, and, yes, you can tell he's young (and, at times, hormonally challenged ;) ) from his writing style. That in no way spoils the book for me, though. I found it utterly fascinating and I loved his little drawings and detailed descriptions. In fact I completely disagree with whoever said the descriptive writing was tedious- surely a book of this nature would be nothing without description?!

. From a Persian Tea House: Travels in Old Iran
City Travel Guides > Books > Iran
by: Michael Carroll
July 30, 2007
This is a tremendously easy book to read, written in an engaging but non pretentious fashion. Mostly travelogue, Aziz allows you to travel with him, meet the characters he meets and lead a little bit of their lives with them. The simple descriptions create powerful and lasting images and the text moves along in a fluid and entertaining fashion.
The real surprise is when Aziz deviates from travelogue and begins to engage in an analysis of the subjects he stumbles upon. His insight is not revelatory for a liberal reader, but it is fresh and emotive. He does not shy away from tackling controversial topics although there is sometimes a restraint which leaves you with the impression that the author has much more to say, but not enough inches to say it in.
