This is one of the most accessible ways to learn about the ancient middle east, presented as an atlas with great photos and illustrations, but written by real experts and containing up to date and thorough information on a subject that is constantly changing. Probably contains most of what anybody needs to know about the cradle of civilisation. Don't be put off by the high price.

This is one of Thesiger’s most affectionate portraits of a people and their environment, almost on a par with his travels in the Empty Quarter. Thesiger was writing just as the oil companies were beginning to exploit the natural resources of the region and the growing heresy of non-Muslims on Arab lands was already a cause for distress, anger and humiliation among the Marsh Arabs. Thesiger was accepted (just) because of his great ability to empathise with and live alongside fiercely proud and intensely religious Arab peoples. I came across this book by chance, browsing through the withdrawn books on sale in my local library. It turned out to be a very fortunate whim since this book is really very good. I was initially attracted to it because of it's Agatha Christie connection (being a fan of her). I already knew a fair amount about Agatha Christie's life (her divorce, her trip to the Middle East and subsequent encounter with Max Mallowan) when I started reading it but Andrew Eames' treatment of this period in the crime novelist's life is by far the best account of it I've read. He clearly reveals how significant the trip was as a turning point in her life. He also made it romantic and adventurous which other accounts have not tended to do.

Having recently moved to North America this book has really helped me understand what I have got in to and what is just over the border and coming this way! This is a series of intelligent and insightful articles on American culture, attitudes towards race, war and foreign policy. While occasionally falling in to the trap of making easy generalizations (a case of genuine anger and political theory combining to trip him up in the face of more grey colored realities) Gary Young successfully gets to grips with the real complexities of what makes America what it is and what factors have shaped its attitudes towards the rest of us on the planet! Written from an angle I would never have imagined, the world of trucking has never sounded so interesting.

The writing style is fluent and easy to read and the story will keep you turning the pages - well, if you're anything like me it will.

A compelling story, and beautifully told by an author I have not heard of before. I really would suggest you give it a try. I was not disappointed.

The book is notable for introducing the reader to the subject that came to dominate Maxwell's life and thus enrapture millions - otters. The book is a must for fans of Maxwell's writing and is an invaluable prequel to "Ring Of Bright Water".
