Dave Gorman for me is one of the founding fathers of the recent quest comedy novels that have filled my non-fiction shelves. With his `Are you Dave Gorman' and his `Googlewack Adventure' I was entertained and educated. `Unchained America' follows a similar path to these two earlier books, but with some major differences. Gorman has made TV shows out of all of his books, but whilst previously he adapted them using the photos and short films he made himself, this time he goes out to make a documentary. Unfortunately, this means that the book suffers.

One of the best birthday presents I've ever received....

It's not a book to replace individual lonely planet guides, but is a brilliant way to chase away winter blues, or alternatively, if you're thinking about going away somewhere, to have a brief idea of the time to go.

I much prefer leafing through a beautiful book like this rather than researching "when to go" on websites. It is the "big picture" of a country rather than east/west coast specific, but that's all you want or need if you're planning a fantasy trip, or if you're just looking for some ideas.

I've got the hardbook version which I think is better than the paperback one as it somehow makes it more "special" (without sounding naff I hope).

This is the second Lois Pryce book I have bought and read, to add to my large collection of travel books (not all motorcycle travel), and I unable to decide if it is the best or the second best book on my shelf. Either way they are both written by Lois! This book is well named; at times I found myself holding my breath as I turned the pages, wondering what was going to happen next. I'm sure there were indentations in the covers when I finished.
My good lady is not a travel book or motorcycle fan but she simply devoured both these books in a day or two each, so I can recommend this book highly to people with a passion for bikes, a passion or adventure travel AND to people without! The book has everything you need to know about doing some off-piste motorcycling. It makes some amazing trips sound vaguely feasible. Even for more mundane trips around the UK and Europe it has loads of good stuff about selection of gear and bike. It has loads of good biking stories too.

I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. This was an enjoyable book to read. It's a book that just goes to show how many truly interesting people there are out there on the internet. It's often a book about unbelievable coincidences and how taking a chance can take you all over the Globe. It's also a book about one man's attempt to avoid working, something I can sympathise with!

The pace of the book is good, particularly towards the end where the chapters are often only 2-3 pages long and it becomes a parade of entertaining, unusual and genuinely intriguing people. And it's definitely the people that make this book enjoyable and entertaining, rather than Gorman's need to complete this book. If anything, his constant attempts to engage our sympathy are a down point, if only a minor one.

I had high hopes for this book but I found it to be both boring, lacking depth and patronising - to such a point that I feel she is boarding on dangerous parameters. The author comes accross as very smug which is off putting too.

The book is very well produced and is very pleasing. The information regarding resorts is comprehensive and the photography is excellent. Personally I would have preferred a little more space devoted to photographs of the sealife of each region beacuse that is what appealed to me the most. The photographs which are provided are of a very high standard and make me wish I could dive more often.

I bought this guide before I travelled around Ecuador and other parts of South America last summer. Although it was helpful, well presented and laid-out, I found the guide disppointing in two main ways:
The maps used are sometimes inaccurate in terms of where the symbols for bus stations, hotels etc have been placed, and some street names do not match those given in the guide;
The guide has been badly edited in a few places, meaning that it is difficult to understand what point the author is trying to make.
I also found that a lot of information in this edition is long out of date (if you are buying this, make sure to print of a copy of Lonely Planet's updates from their website, although I don't know how useful they are either).
