. New York: 365 Days: From the Photo Archives of the "New York Times"
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
from: Harry N. Abrams, Inc.
October 06, 2006
A thick, 744 page book presenting the flavor of the world's premier city. Though the title suggests a visual year it is more a selection of photos arranged round themes: sports, travel, markets, the weather, construction, entertainment, civic events, personalities etc. Each gets a few pages with some images going back to the nineteenth century though most are from the thirties onward.
I thought the selection was quite impressive, there is something for every New Yorker here. Some of the names of the fifty-one photographers in the index will be familiar to readers of the Times. Neal Bonenzi, Sam Falk, Vincent Laforet and Ernie Sisto get the largest showing. Two of Laforet's are particularly stunning: his night ... Read More:

. Corpus Christi: A Play
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Terrence McNally
August 25, 2000
The story of Christ retold, this time with Jesus portrayed as a sexually active homosexual. This is supposed to be shocking but really it's very stale fare. McNally knows of course that no one, not even the most convinced Christian, is going to burn down his house or behead him - could he or the actors who will produce this play say the same if McNally had decided to target Mohammed or Buddha? No, that's why this play far from being a firework thrown into the darkness of superstition and intolerance is actually just a damp squib held up by an inveterate attention seeker. A far more radical, shocking mdern day interpretation of Christ would be to show him as a kick-ass, take-names messiah who throws devils off cliffs and serves booze at temperance ... Read More:

. Muswell Hill History and Guide (Tempus History & Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Gay and Lesbian
by: Gay Ken
September 01, 2002
It seems that all of the major guidebooks lump Alabama together with its neighbours and give it a slim chapter at that, focusing solely on the larger cities.
Thank goodness for a series like Off the Beaten Path which isn't afraid to take tourists off the Interstates and inspire us to visit roadside BBQ shacks, find scenic spots for a picnic or hunt down treasures in small towns devoted to antiques and art galleries.
Without this guide I would never have thought of visiting Auburn and its sister city, Opelika. I would never have heard of Eufaula, the 'Natchez of Alabama' with the state's second-largest historic district. I was delighted to hear you can visit the town where Truman Capote and Harper Lee grew up as kids. Imagine ... Read More:
