. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (Definitions)
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: John Boyne
September 11, 2008
It's difficult to review this book without giving too much away. The subject matter is well covered but this approach is more unusual than others. It shows us how a child's simplistic point of view can portray so accurately and completely an horrific period in history, that we need not look for any other reference to the human tragedy of the holocaust. It is simply written in keeping with 9 year old Bruno's musings on those around him and his situation, and has wonderful touches of warmth and innocence that will make you smile. It's a very short book, so just read it and make your own mind up.

. By Royal Command (Young Bond)
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: Charlie Higson
September 03, 2008
So we come to a close to the 'young bond' series, which i have to admit was far better than i expected it to be. Praise to Charlie Higson for handling the task emmensly well and for creating a very entertaining series. 'By Royal Command' is the final book in the series and this is the fifth time James Bond, a fourteen year old kid, has managed to get in to some mad far fetched adventure invovlving spies and this time round the prince of whales. So you have to completly abondon any plausability factor and by that i mean it's difficult to beleive that one boy can get mixed up in so many adventures, but still these books are entertaining and if you have read the others the chances are you won't be dissapointed with this. All the right ingrediants are ... Read More:

. Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox: 6 (Artemis Fowl)
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: Eoin Colfer
August 07, 2008
Artemis Fowl is a fantasy book about a teenage criminal mastermind who discovered subterranean fairies. It is an action-packed book filled with wacky characters and jokes.
The plot is about Artemis having to travel back in time to find a cure to save his mother. The cure is a lemur which Artemis had killed when he was ten-years old because Mother had spent the money that Artemis was going to use to help try and get back his father who was taken by the mafia. This was a childish piece of revenge and he's now going to have to retrieve it from his younger-self's clutches.
Artemis, until recently, had been a criminal sought on becoming the most powerful one in the world until he discovered that that wasn't the most important thing in life. ... Read More:

. Tom's Midnight Garden
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: Philippa Pearce
2008-01
This is a classic story for children, set in the 50's, it is about time, memory and friendship.
Tom, lonely and isolated as he is in quarantine, finds his way back in time, at night (when the hall clock strikes 13), to a wonderful old garden and a little girl called Hattie, who, to his curiosity, is dressed in old fashioned clothes. The two lonely children become friends and I don't want to give away the beautifully devoloped plot, but Tom slowly realises that Hattie is growing up, while he remains the same age.
The atmosphere of the story is both mysterious and engaging, as Tom slowly works out where he is and who Hattie really is.
The end of the story takes in the biblical idea of time coming to and end, or the modern notion of ... Read More:

. Snakehead (Alex Rider)
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure

These audiobooks are brilliant. The voices and narration are wonderfully rich and varied, the stories are incredible and yet still credible enough to work. The pictures painted in the reader's imagination through the vocabulary used by the author are amazing - the reader can almost smell the smells, touch the textures and really *see* the colours within the scenes, and the narrator brings the books to life wonderfully. I now have all 7 of the Alex Rider books on CD, and would recommend any of them to anyone. They are suitable for teen readers, but also perfectly enjoyable for adults - I listen to them in the car on my commute to and from work, and it provides a very welcome distraction from the concerns of work!
If you want to travel the world in the ... Read More:

. Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony: 5
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: Eoin Colfer
May 03, 2007
Keep it simple, keep it fast and keep it jokey: Perfect entertainment for the mid-teens (and older).
I've enjoyed all the Artemis Fowl novels to date - and this latest, Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony, is no exception.
For those not in the know, Artemis is a teenage genius with a penchant for crime, and a big - very BIG - minder called Butler. He's been annoying the hell out of the fairy kingdom for years, although, having saved each other from disaster more than once, they have the sort of a love-hate relationship neither side would admit to: Holly, ex-LEPrecon (the fairy police), is his principle contact and Foley (the centaur) the technical wizardry supplier - oh, and there is a singularly repulsive character called Mulch, the perfect manifestation ... . Why the Whales Came
City Travel Guides > Books > Adventure
by: Michael Morpurgo
February 05, 2007
Michael Morpurgo has once again enchanted me with this brilliant book. This is really a breath-taking read and I am not just exaggerating - it is actually splendid stuff! I would nominate this book for the Whitbread Award, although the author has won it many a times, or the Smarties Award.
The foundation stone of this story is the curse which came to the people of Samson, one of the Isles of Scilly, and how two young children - an inseparable pair of friends, a boy called Daniel and a girl called Gracie - and the supposedly mad Birdman of Bryher manage to redeem the curse some thirty years later.
I would rate this book 10/ 10 (it is on my favourites list) and would recommend it to older children and Morpurgo writes clever, complex, and thought-provoking books.
