. No Time For Goodbye
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Linwood Barclay
June 12, 2008
I had heard very little about this book before buying it, but was pleasantly surprised when it was a page turner from the outset. The book has a fast pace and is very easy to read. I was gripped and finished it within 24 hours without skipping anything.
I think there are enough reviews that cover the basic plot, so will not go over that. I feel some characterisations were lacking but the suspense in the book more than made up for this.
Buy and read this by all means but be prepared to put everything else aside until to read the conclusion. I will be looking out for the next book from this author avidly.

. The Forgotten Garden
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Kate Morton
May 29, 2008
Having read the House at Riverton and thought it okay, it was with a little trepidation that I picked up The Forgotten Garden, and all I can say is Wow,Wow, Wow what a wonderful web was woven, full of mysteries, twists, sadness, and a very unpredicted ending. I could not put this book down I took it on holiday and was gripped. There were times I had to retrace a chapter or two, just to confirm who was who, and was I going along the right track. Dear reader you will be wowed. The best moment in the book is the very last page, the epilogue, I found myself crying at the sadness, and also a feeling of loss at having come to the end of a most memorable book. One to be read again and again.

. The Outcast
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Sadie Jones
June 16, 2008
Sadie Jones's moving story of young Lewis's struggle with the emotional crippling delivered by family events and (quoting another review) "communal failure to take responsibility for a troubled child" is both absorbing and beautifully written, without any sentimentality. I was a child in the 1950s, it's hard to believe that Sadie Jones wasn't there as well! Her evocation of the period is admirable and inaccuracies of detail are minimal (eg British police cars had bells not sirens, and a girl would have worn stretch slacks not jeans) and certainly don't detract. The parallel and horrifying portrayal of the Carmichael family is entwined with that of Lewis to such an degree that the reader alternately hopes for and dreads the resolution of Lewis and Kit's ... . The Road Home
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Rose Tremain
June 12, 2008
"The Road Home" is one of those books that succeeds in making you look at the world around you with new eyes. It's the story of Lev, a widower who immigrates from an unspecified country in Eastern Europe to the UK in the belief that it will be easy to find well-paying work there and thereby support his mother and child back home. Instead he finds that London is both considerably more expensive and less welcoming than he anticipates. Eventually he does find work and start to build some friendships, but it's far from an easy journey for him.
Rose Tremain makes us care about Lev and acutely communicates his loneliness and isolation. Occasionally he does things that we don't like, but he still maintains our sympathy and interest throughout. In fact, all ... Read More:

. The Book Thief
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Markus Zusak
January 01, 2008
A great idea for Death to be the narrator and one that works here. The insanity of the Second World War is captured in these pages brilliantly and the lives of ordinary Germans during this unforgettable moment in history is a story that is not often told. It's not always an enjoyable tale, but it's one that should be read - and not in a 'schoolbook-that-everyone-is-forced-to-get-through' kind of way, but in a 'this-will-add-another-key-dimension-to-an-epic-six years' sort of manner. The only reason that I didn't give the book 5 stars is I thought the ending was a litle unsatisfactory.

. A History of Modern Britain
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Andrew Marr
May 02, 2008
I'm not much of a reader but has always had an interested in history and so this seemed to fit the bill for a book on modern history that would be readable and informative. And so it was. I was amazed by how little I know of Britain's recent history but it was interesting when I got to the 70s to note names appearing that I could remember being mentioned when I was a boy, but also a historical narrative of the 80s when I lived though it!
My only disappointment was the seemingly never-ending series of failures and disasters that seem to follow the historical journey of Britain - hardly a fault of the book but depressing all the same when it seemed there was hardly ever a political decision taken that didn't cost the country millions or was a missed opportunity to improve ... . The Resurrectionist
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: James Bradley
June 19, 2008
I have just finished this book and although it started off well I'm afraid I found it to be really quite a depressing book - I didn't find the main character likeable, in fact he was really quite feckless! I wouldn't describe it as a "page turner" and I was actually quite glad when it finished. The post mortem descriptions were good and the basic story about body snatchers, as I said already started well, I felt let down by the characters and by the end of the story I couldn't really care less about them!
