Once hooked, followers of Alistair Sawday remain committed for life. They doubtlessly will welcome his new book Go Slow England with booking forms to the ready, but for the uninitiated, let me explain.

Alistair Sawday is to where to stay as Nigel Slater is to what to cook. In other words both are enthusiasts, know, love and care passionately about their respective worlds, never - or hardly ever - put a pen wrong and - here's the salient point - understand the wants, needs and desires of their fans. This Alastair Sawday book is absolutely fabulous. Mya husband and I never use anyone other than 'Sawdays'. You will never be disappointed and the accommodation you will never fault. It really is a super book and well worth a buy.

I often turn to the Alastair Sawday website for help when looking for a place to stay. But there is nothing better than the guide. The maps give you a clear idea where the B&B's are, and you can then flip through the relevant entries to find one that suits you. And you can be sure that any one of them will be something out of the ordinary and worth the visit. I don't use anything else.

Thanks to Alistair Sawday I have much more room on the bookshelf; the AA, RAC, Michelin and Johansens books won't be needed again so they have all taken a long holiday to the charity bookshop!

Sawday's British Hotels & Inns is much more then a book; it is a guide that will change your attitude towards `going away' forever. In the past trying to find a nice place to stay was always the job of my wife who would spend hours researching places, but now there is a sprint to the bookshelf to find this book whenever we decide to go anywhere.

Once I've found somewhere I like the feel of I don't even bother doing any additional research...what's the point, the guys at Alistair Sawday have done it all for you. When you initially read this ... Read More:

Well Alistair Sawday has done it again, this book uncovers all the gems that you would not find on your own, each and every time we visit one of the recommendations we are not disappointed, from spit and sawdust pubs to gastro pubs this book covers them all. The layout is really easy to use and if you enjoy a good pint, great food and adventure then this is the book for you, it knocks spots off all others.

Since I was introduced to Alastair Sawday's books & website about 2 years ago I have never looked back. As per previous publications 'Italy' did not fail to live up to its title of 'Special Places'. I have spent a number of evenings traveling, in my mind, through the wonderful countryside, city & coast of Italy with Sawdays as my guide.

Sawday's is just wonderful as it gives you a very informed idea of each place and depending on what you are looking for there is always something to please. As always the book is perfectly laid out and very easy to use - it was also great to see the green emphasis of the book. I have recommended Sawday's to family & friends and will continue to do so.

Special places to stay - a bold statement, delivered in spades by the latest in the consistently excellent Sawday guides. 170 plus places - B&Bs, hotels, inns, some self-catering - each independently inspected by the Sawday team and special in some way.

I like this book. It oozes quality. As well as the collection of hugely tempting places to stay, it offers suggestions for local walks and days out with the kids, restaurants, pubs, and cream teas (of course). It helpfully lists places with good wheelchair and wifi access. It also notes those within 2 miles of the National Cycle Network - the ideal book for pocket, glovebox or saddlebag.

As with all the 'Special Places' guides, this is full of charming and interesting places to stay. It's worth planning your trip around the entries, which is what we did recently when travelling the length of Spain with our dogs (the book tells you if places cater for dogs, vegetarians, children etc). It's so beautifully produced that you'll enjoy reading it even if you're not leaving home.

My family & I live in India and run a Travel Consultancy business for visitors to India and Bhutan. We have sent our guests to many parts of the country, visiting hotels we have discovered ourselves and also those run by our relatives & friends.
After having bought this guide book we were pleased to discover that many of our most favored places are listed beautifully.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling extensively in India & looking for just the right place to stay.
