. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Book 1)
City Travel Guides > Books > Ages 9-11
by: J.K. Rowling
June 26, 1997
I remember the moment back in 2001 when one of my friends thrust Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone into my hands and ordered me to read. I'd already been vaguely curious about the series before, what with all the hype surrounding Goblet of Fire, which had been released the previous year. The minute the book was put into my hands during a lunch break at college, I began to read. After that, I couldn't put it down. My form tutor rolled his eyes when he caught a glimpse of what I was reading - obviously he'd failed to be driven into all the hype surrounding Harry Potter - but I ignored his sniggering and carried on, and i'm very glad I did!
I was 17 when I started reading the books, around the same age as Harry was by the end ... Read More:

. Short!: A Book of Very Short Stories
City Travel Guides > Books > Ages 9-11
by: Kevin Crossley-Holland
March 26, 1998
There has always been something rather second rate about Kevin Crossley-Holland; if he has mastered anything it's picking at the off-cuts of other people's work and making them his own and I think that this collection demonstrates this clearly.
The traditional stories that are in this collection have all been done better elsewhere and the ones taht seem to be Crossley-Holland's own all seem imbued with something rather mean-spirited; tales full of children coming to harm or being threatened.
He even has a go at being "street" and getting down with the kids - "Hey, respect, lion!" But it doesn't work: it just sounds like some elderly white bloke trying to be current.
The writer's biography calls him a "master story-teller": that, ... Read More:

. Tom's Midnight Garden
City Travel Guides > Books > Ages 9-11
by: Philippa Pearce
2008-01
This is a classic story for children, set in the 50's, it is about time, memory and friendship.
Tom, lonely and isolated as he is in quarantine, finds his way back in time, at night (when the hall clock strikes 13), to a wonderful old garden and a little girl called Hattie, who, to his curiosity, is dressed in old fashioned clothes. The two lonely children become friends and I don't want to give away the beautifully devoloped plot, but Tom slowly realises that Hattie is growing up, while he remains the same age.
The atmosphere of the story is both mysterious and engaging, as Tom slowly works out where he is and who Hattie really is.
The end of the story takes in the biblical idea of time coming to and end, or the modern notion of ... Read More:

. Journey to the River Sea
City Travel Guides > Books > Ages 9-11
by: Eva Ibbotson
May 10, 2002
Based on customer's positive reviews, I bought Journey to the Riversea for a 12 year old girl. Making the unusual decision to read the book first, has turned out to be a compelling, riveting read. I thoroughly enjoyed and agonised, wondering what was going to happen next. I'm now an Eva Ibbotson fan. This superbly written adventure story, with its unexpected twists and turns, happily kept me awake for most a night. An avid reader since childhood, I loved this story and the characters, the exception being the ghastly Carter twins and their parents. I'm not only satisfied the 12 year old will be as thrilled as I am with the book, I now have The Dragonfly Pool. I see no reason why at my grandmother age, I should miss out on the best of children's literature. ... Read More:
